spending several pleasant weeks here 1
again took up ihe line of march east
ward, as one of an escort to take a num-V-er
o' inmates of the Asylum, to the Na
tional Asylum at Washington. It is
three hours ride by rail from hero to
Chicago, where v.o leiuained tlu liour and
'a, half, but being an innocent abroad nd
thinking I might not .have much time to
o hunt my train if it got lost I confined
my observations mainly to the d''pt
We weie too far north to see much of
the destruction ocensk n d l-y the great
flood?, but we si w a few deieoli-shed
bridges. Whil; traveling through the
CDal and iron reg'ons of Pennsylvania,
we could take a puling view of the
'.great irjn manufactories. Our coming m
to Pittsburg and seeing the great flumes
from the iron founderios I could scarcely
beiieve that the entire city wa not on
lire. Nothing of sulilcient interest oc
turrfd ti be worthy of mention until
our arrival at Washington. On our wav
from the city to the Asylum we got .
glimpse of the Navy Yard, where to mv
"surprise we saw only a few " Yankee
cheese-boxes"' lying at anchor.
After seeing our old soldiers in a home
prepared, for the, o who were disabled in
defending their country, and who are
no'-v menial !y as well as physically disa
bled, the two physicians and I staitfii
out to "do" the city, but I soon found
that it eonhl not be "done" at one sit
in. I had hoped to visit Congress
while in session, but was disappointed,
but NYii had tho pleasure of laterally
resting ourselves in, Senatorial chairs.
The waiting room is ornamented with
line oil paintings about 12 by K fret,
representing the importaut events since
thu dis-.-ovciy of America. The height
of the dome of the Caoital is 200 feet
above the tide h-vel. From this we
have a view of the whole city, and as
tu? Government l uildings were pointed
out to me, among them the Smithsonian
Institute, Treasury building, Patent Of
fice, Soldiers' lloise, ie., ic, I ftlt that
every American citizen had good reason

Having spent forty-eight hours in the
Capitol we tool: the train for New York, j
a ride of four hours, whore wo were plad '

but as it was foy we could jiot jet a
view of the city. Wo walked about half
a milt on the r;dye and the Doctor said
we wore about one third of the distance
across. Wo next tried the elevated rail- !
roail which i;s much pleasanter than trav
eling in the horse cars. After about
four mile' fide we ca lie tu Central Park.

visit friends and I the Park. Of tlws I
will not attempt a minute description.
It contains a menagerie, museum, artifi

to return to the hotel I boarded a er

Next morning I again took thft cars
for an eiht hour ride to Salem, Mass.
This is a very interesting place for peo
ple who are t'o'.A of old relics. lfer

in America. 1 visited whit is called
the witch houJW, wliicli is a frame build
ing mostly of oik, ami has stood two
hundred an I fifty years. In it several

relatives in Sahvn, I visited the iity of
Boston, the place of Pevolutiouarr fame,
litre I visited the Muvu'ii of Fine Arts,
Dunkerlliil Monument, and t:ie Charles-
town Navy Yard (?) Yes, there w;is a
jurd, but there was little in that navy
to arouse the national pride of an Amer
ican. The Mu.-eum contains a tare col
lection of ancient sculpture, remains ol
Mound builders, Kgypwians, l-ut why
attempt a description. Bunker Ilili
Monument is built of granite ; i do not
reiv-cmber ihe dimension, but I destiuct
ly remember i limbing 297 steps to reach
the top, but the view wa worth double
the work.
Although I s-pent but a short time
with my relatives in Silem and lloston,
yet when I turned my fie. hompward 1
felt that I was not taking leave of stran
gcrs.
Perhaps thi-; letter ; is quite long
enough without mentioning other cities
as C::ic3go, Dakimore. and Philadelphia.

was born to them, four boys and five

a daughter. The deceased has lived
in several states and his children ar.

Iowa, two sons and a daughter in this
state and oho son in Washington Terrh
torv. He had the love and respect of
all his neighbors and relatives. He
lived fvr many years a humble Christian
life and died sustained by , Christian
