Ho is a French Louisianiari by birth, and a resident of iSart Frais0, Cal., where he has con siderable property, nrul is an ingenious workrnau in anything that requires a .thorough understanding of mechanics. He and his son had some splendid look ing .rifles whic& he constructed. We look them around Frogmore, and ho a well as his son, who is an artist And photograph colorist, wero very much .delighted. Mills favored us with some excellent singing, one piece they ksang as very beautiful and well executed, its name -was "Where Mammas Neves Die." Mrs. Mills fingers the organ keys with much grace. We had a rare feast of cherries. Mr. R. .8. FuVerton is very successful as a fruit raiser, and understands to per fection the $cien.ce Qf arboriculture. Dolle rode down with tis rw far as the Beaver hotel when wjereVumed home. We called on Tuesday at Mr. S. A. Miles' house, which ho has Jiad repaper ed and repainted in modern btylo of art. His daughter Lucy is getting better. We were taken out to view their fine garden, almost the enro work of Willie Miles' land. We were presented with some mammoth Heads 1 lettuce, Tl- peas were in bloom, the potatoes in blossom, and everything in a high stato of for wardness. Wo noticed a peach tree growing in a ledge, and yet full of peach es. The IdQUsts around the house afford a charming shade. Mr. Henry Vanblaracom stopped with us all night Wednesday, and renewed the friendship of old days. He is living near tilencoe in Washington County. He reports the death of Enos "Korthrup, aged eight years. The funeral services wero held at Korthrop's father's house, within two miles of Glencoe. Rev. Jef ferson Ca.niplell of the United .Breth ren Church preached his funeral sermon wh'ch was one of .rjat beuity and power, and marks Campbell as an orator of the .highest rank. J. I. Smith, of Harrisburg, Linn Co., died at his residence in U?at place last Saturday. Mr. Smith was well known .throughout the state. He has been a citizen of Oregon from his early boy hood. In 1 87G he was elected state sen ator to represent his county, and showed rnarked ability as.a legislator. He was j- man of good talents and possessed con siderable influence ..as a local politician. Jie was a brother in-law of Dr, A. C. Kinney of this city. Astorian. Major Adams has received an invita tion to participate in the Fourth of July .celebration at Garnet, Kansas. It is to he a jwonster celebration. Lorin H. The Dr. and his excellent wife will be much missed in the society of the County. He is very deaf and hopes to recover his hearing by stopping in tho healthy air of Columbia County. It seems pleasant to see Esq. Perry once more around among folks. .Judge Moore has bought his children a horse, which bears the euphonious name of Doughnut. It is a bay in col or, and very gentle. The children en joy their new horse hugely. Frank rode out to visit Birney on Wednesday morn ing. Met Edward Htnrici in town. He has been very sick, but is now on the mend. He reports tho water rising fast. The cattle are wading from ridgo: to rid;;c on Sauvie's Island, and cause much care on tho part of their owners , Mrs. Frank Hoyt has had quite a trip up the Valley. Frank has purchased a fine covered carnage something in:the style of tho old fashioued chaise.. It will keep off rain and sun, and is naid to be very elegant, J. W. Campbell left on the boat to day to look out'somc land for L Samu els, proprietor of the West Shore. If iere is a good piece left Campbell; will hunt it out, particularly if it is for an Editor. Miss Annie Merrill has finished her school in Ns. 9 District on the Upper Scappoose. She is as brilliant as ever, and foels great respect for Major Adams for his fearlessness in telling the truth. Mr. S. A. Mjiie?, executor of the Gum Estate, has purchased a marble monu ment, cost 8100, for John Gum's grave Surely if any one deserved a fine monu ment noble old John Gum does. When wo went up the road Sunday we met many railroad teams and slath ers of Chinamen. Mr. Eugeno Semplo took up J. W. Campbell, surveyor, to Cedar Mountain Mill on business. Mr. Henry Vanblaracom was in town on Tuesday on tho way to Rainier, lie ha haj a very serious time with his yes. J. H. Davenport lias a refrigerator where he keeps his poda and ginger alo which has a refreshing coolness in theso hot days. Mr. W. H. Musgrovo was lately in St. Helen, hunting J. W. Campbell for surveying purposes. Mr. Musgrove is splendid company. Mr. M. F. Hazois little daughter Rhoda has been very low with typhoid fever, and o.t expected to live, but we hear is a Jittle better. Dr. Jessup presented a purse of fifty dollars to Miss Willard in Portland to help defray her expenses whilo battling for the cause of Temperance. Mrs. W. O. King, wife of tho Grand Lecturer, rodo out to give us a call on Wednesday morning. Sho stated shu was much pleased with Oregon. The blasting on the railroad still con tinues.
