The ornament of a house i? the friends who frequent it. A good revolution is not often followed by a revolution. It is reversed home sickDess to want to see the wide world. A great society oan be easiest enter tained by a theater. The least merchandise is in a coherence with all commerce. An ignorant man hath an eagle's wings and an owl's eyes. It was out West that a political delg gate moved a bar be set up in the confer ence room. He said he wanted to stop the numerous motions to adjourn. Oil Citv Derrick. i The Gfri of the Silver Dollar. Miss Anna W. Williams is the name of the lady whose profile is stamped upon our Bland silver dollar of the United Stares. "When the clever young de signer, Morgan, wa3 brought to this country from England in 1S7G to make a design for a new dollar he settled down in Philadelphia and looked about for a model for the head of a Goddess of Liberty, which was to be stamped on one side of the coin. He selected Miss Wil liams, who was at that time living with her mother and aunt at No. 1023 Spring Garden street. The designer, before attempting to make a sketch, visited the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and was for months engaged in stndving American art in order to be able to thoroughly Americanize his work. He desired to present &h the principal figure . on the coin a representative head of the "American female beauty. His first idea was to make a fanciful head of the Godness of Liberty, but ho finally determined to take as a model a living American girl. With this end in view he, with the aid of a friend in the city who is an artist of decided merit, succeed in finding a lady whose profile struck him as being ex actly what he wanted; but it was with considerable difficulty that he persuaded her to sit for him. Finally Miss Wil liams, who was the ladv he had selected, consented, although it did not occur to her at the time that she might become historically famous. After four trying sittings Mr. Morgan succeeded in making traces sufficient to proceed with his work. He declared that the profile was the most perfect he had ever seen, either in this country or in England, and at once proceeded to Bketch the head which now appears on the face of all of the Bland dollars. The identity of the original of this famous figure was kept a profound secret for two years. Hie Disappointed Candidate. The candidate who got left at the county convention can be told by the wav he grasps your hand, braces him self against his gurgling emotion, and "whisperingly inquiries: "Did you ever hear of a case like lhatV" ! You never did. You will ; teli him that you never did, and he pulls you into a doorway and continues: ; "I am done with politics forever!" lTaL" ... "Yes, I am, and with the party, too!" "You don't say!" "Oh, but I am. This thing has satis fied me that there is no such thing as honesty in politics, and that a politician has no more word than a dog. I was sold out !" "Possible!" "Sold out and lied aut! They n?ed money to beat me. They lied about mo. They played hypocrite aud knave. Here I have served the party for nineteen long years and never aske.t for an office, and the minute I decide to accept a nomination for a little fifteen cent posi tion they go to work and beat me in con vention with, a wooden-head who doesn't know enough to mark a barril of pork. Corruption, sir car-rup-shun and the whole ticket will be defeate 1 on account of it." And the best of it is he takes you for a man who isn't posted. He doesn't be lieve you hare the slightest idea that he packed threeVor four caucuses, bought a dozen delegates, told three lies to the other man's one, and was beaten because his delegates sold out. He takes you for an innocent, and he grasps your hand again at parting and chokingly says: "Corruption vile corruption! Most bare-faced fraud in American politics! Can't train with a party upheld by the practice of such principles caa't possi bly do it." Detroit Free Press. UAH Tor Her." If any of our sensational romauciots are in want of the materials for a story, they will find what they require in the report of a recent police case at Dudley.. An ex constable had to explain how it happened that he came to be a polyga niist. Six years ago ho married one lady; three years ago he took to himself 'a second spouse; how could he account for suchadescen tiuto Mormonism? Very pathetic was the defence he put iu, and as manly as touching. nis first wife ws eighteen jears older than himself, "and he had never j loved her, although he had, indeed, tried hard to do so." Here we have the picture of a noble minded man struggling to do his duty. For three long years he strove, but not u drop of love for his elderly helpmate could ho pump up from his aching heart. Then there came his fate, in the person of a pretty damsel only 1U years old. "I loved her from the first moment I saw her," pleaded the man, "and I shall always love her, but I can never love the. other one, although" she has been a good wife to me, I own." There was the whole case from first to last, and in the pages of thrilling fiction the elder wife would have opportunely been cut oil by some stroke of fate an earth quake, or the fall of an aerolite, or some thing of that sort. But real life some times ventures to ! ignore the ethics of sensation, and so in this case the victim of sentiment had to stand committed to take his trial at the assizes for the vul gar crime of bigamy. A fashion journal notes the dress of lemon colored tullo with moire bodice. We don't know anything as to the lemon colored tulle, but feel satisfied that more bodice would fill a long-felt want in full dress costumes. Lowell Citizen, r , A visitor to a 1 baby show down in Maine thus sums up his conclusions: "For pure, unadulterated foolishness about a baby, a father can 'outfoolish all the rest of the family yes. and I will throw in the grandmother on the mother's side, too.'
