ANOTHER BRAVE FOLICEMAK. Policeman, Flay, whos name is in keeping with his le.st known characteris tics, yesterday dragged his wifn through the streets, and arraigned hr before a po lice magistrate, on the charge of disor derly conduct. The -,poor woman hail gore to him to g t -money with xxhioh to pay the rent As he refused to do it, de followed him with her baby iu her arm . This, in the eyes of the astut" olS - of the 1; w constituted a breach of the p- a e, $ n I he arres Rvl the mother of his child in J hid hr locked up all night in a re ! in the station ho M:s. Fliy a y that her husband does noth ng f'r he. ?U jOrt, but that he lavishes all his nion ey on another woman and himse'f. the xzvf youk rorr omci It is shown by Mr. Pi'-rson's statistics for the last fiscal year, that the tremen dous increase iu the lare po.st-onlee, does not necessarily call for a correspond ing increase of expenses, at lea it when a good organization is once eU'.ctr.d. For ths year just closed, the receipts at the New York Post office, were S 1,203,0 J J; while those of the year preceeding, had been $.V90,900. There were only 101 additioual employee, and the increase in the wagei and salaries paid, was only $23,460. The other expenditures were slightly increased, and the net revenue for the past year xv.-i $2,8SI,049, against $2,532,049. This is another argument in favor of cheap postage. SIGHT DUTY ON THE BEKCn The police justices do not liko the new law which requires them t sit at night to hear cases at Police Head pur lers and thy are trying to shirk their duty, thus imposed uprn them. The law is intended for a protection of persons arretted on flimsy charges, at a late hour when it is difficult, or impossible to pro cure bondsmen. Many innocent men and women have been subject to th mortification and annryance of being locked up in a dirty cell for a whole night simply liecause an enemy has pre ferred charges and occasioned the arrest of tht aceu&ed after business hours. The police magistrates who are called upon to sit on! f three nights each, during th month, think that police Captains and Cerg a its have the right under the law, to take bail when Court is not iu session and that, therefore, the J ustice is i ot necessary. One very wise Justice says, The law is absurd. Only c-nos of felony osue before the magistrate at Policy Head p titers, ani thj ara t'ia very cm in which hail is not likely to ha o.Tre I. The tendency nowadays is toward co I dhng prisoners and making their onvic tlons more difficult. Every tendency is n behalf of the criminal, and not of the people, $vpry crook and dodge th it i in genious lawyer cm demise, is brought to protect ciminals, from punishment." Jnst as if it was a ne.xy thing for a lawyer to defend his client 1 Another Justice say that the execu tion of the law will be a boon to thieves find burglars. Thus & tflan accosts a po liceman and, and tells Iiu tithf. his heen assaulted. He p.oi:4$ (tat his as sailant and the two arc taken to Head quarters, where the charge is made, aud the alleged asasilant is locked up. Tin; policeman's heat is meantime left un guarded, and the companions of the al leged beaten man and his assailant, rob bank, or rifle a store and escape. The next morning the .accused i arraign.!; but as his victim does not appear, he u discharged. The fir.it cise bef.)r a m igi-.tr tt sit ting at night, cam-! ut on Thurs I iy .'vpk nmg.
