SAVAGES AND SETTLORS.
Four of the Modoc savages -who were
0 ncerned in tie murder of General
Cm y and Peace Commissioner Thomas
have been hanged, by au hority of th
Federal Government. But by the
oder3 of the same Government the
dozen or more savages who massacred
the peaceful and inoffensdvo settlers on
Lost River, last November American
ciiuens, every one of them, are not
only not punished at all for their
atrocious crimes, but are actually
protected from just punishment at the
hands of the civil authorities and
armed escort is furnished to convey
them to comfortable homes provided
fcr their abode in Wyoming Territory.
The English or American, we ought
to call it of this is : Indians shall be
rewarded for massacring settlers; but
if they murder an officer of the Federal
Government they shall be hung.
Settlers have no rights which the
savages need to respect, and the Gov
ernment will sustain the savages in any
excesses or atr cities perpetrated upon
settlers. God help the settlers ;
the Government stands by the savages.
It settlers expect the Government to
protect them they must become sava
ges. This Modoo business panned out,
is virtually offering savages premiums to
murder peaceful civilians. Pity the
Quaker peace crowd couldn't be obliged
themselves to try life and hazard death
on the frontier, as tho brave and un
protected settlers do. The scalping
and massacring of a few of their num
ber might work a most wholesome
change of sentiment among the survi
vor", as regards the red-handed
" Children of the Foresi," the wolfish
pets of the Government. -Z?nrin.

A General Assassinated A
base murder was committed on the llth
of September, at Yankton Dakota, the
victim being 13 rig. Gen. E. S. McCook,
Secretary of the Territory. He was
6hot at a ra'lroad meeting by a man
named Wintermute in a dispute about
somo bonds. Gen. McCook was the
fifth son of Gen. Daniel McCook of
Ohio, who wa3 killed at the head of
John Morgan's pursuers at the action at
DufHngtori Island, and was one of
eight brothers who served with dis-
Unction in the late war,
three of whom
were killed in battle.
Lake Disaster. jThe propeller
ironsides, connecting with tho Detroit
and Milwaukee Railway, and one of tho
largest Rtcamers on the lakes, foundered
and sunk seven miles ofj Grand Haven
last Monday. Her signal of distress
was hoisted at 9 A. M.,but so terrible
was the sea and hcavv the wind nn
assistance could reach her. The pass-
engers took to the boats, but one rm.
