IJow shall they he made safe aud orderly? Every known country, was paying tribute to America, and I sending its population, here, with all their, diven-e religions, customs, and ideas. Such a combi nation eaonever-have been made haruicni ous except by national education. If religion meant love to (?od and love to man,, it would bo a controlling tpower. isut while in a few hearts it means this, at all other poiuta it bris tols with warfare. Religion kmld mean hirmony j- intelligence Joes Kduoation should include political principles, morality social duty. It should be made compulsory. Kvery f State should provide for the education of its whole people. Such provision has been madosuch principles settled; but as frraier8 sometimes plow up the old sod and sow again, so it befits us to deal with moral growths, and it is time now to d'senss this great matter once more. The influence of foreign elements in our population demands a lively interest in the whole matter. The State must educate its people, and not the church. The State his a right to make its own c xistenoe secure, and security to the State, comes only firm the education of the whole peo ple, which thus becomes self-defense Uosrmatic religion is not necessary to the existence of the State; intelligence is School houses should be multiplied till they are ample for the accommo dation of all' and the teacher should be aaong the Most honored of the land. No one stands so near the father and mother, in influence upon the future of the country, as the school teacher not professors in colleges, but the educators of the masses. Our schools do not teach enough. They should include the distinction between good and evil: ioenlcatc truth, honesty, temperance, self control fidelity, economy aud patriotism. It is not imparativo that tho n.c of the Bible be insisted upon, for raully it wis not the wt felicitous school book but more truth should be taui?l,i Every man shonld improve in the ui truthr I there truth in the houses we build? in the goods we sell? in the work wc do? Are there- not as many A .1. 1 1 t A I 9 II' antrum as mice in an oiu noiei r grasp for more tk&n we descrne, and find ourselves cheated in the quality. It is vain to teach the higher branches aud leave these more important things untaught. Men should be so taught as to be patriotic, not when the drum beats and cannon roar, but when they stmd alono. Dapper, dainty, delicate young men, who are afraid of hard work, swarm in all the cities and beg for soft positions under government and in fat offices. It is a sin for any man te bring up boys thus; they should b J ' 3 be taught to take care of their own mouths and backs with their own hands. It is a shamo to know all about Mars and Jupiter, and nothing of Massachusetts. The State schools should be so good that no private school can live in their vicinity ; and every poor boy should look up to the Stato as his rich uncle. Com pulsory education ought to give no just person offense. The law gives no annoyance to the man who keeps in advance of it. Self-interest might demand education, but it could not bo depended up f Many foreigners come here desiring education for their child ren ; others, who ought to be equally interested come with far different mo tives. They are a useless and danger- oas class with out intelligence. We have five million men in the country; who cannot make anything, and these all require education.
