DA1XAP, SA'I UKIIAY Jl'NI22818?3 IMTOIPi:A5i i: AND CHIMIN The Conference on the relations of Intemperance and Crime, under tfte j auspices of the National Teuperatiee Society, was resumed at the Associa tion Building eft Thursday Fast The Chairman, Kef. A. J. PowelF, and Dr Klisha. Bavri presented additional fjet and! statements oq the subject. Jlr. 4X U. Page, Preskieat of the New Jetsty Temperance Alliance, stated tnat from Chatham Towuhip, vMch a population of 8,700, while there were 14 beer taloou and three licenced taverns, the Morris County Courts had ft large number (of cases; but when these were shut up for a eonsiderable period not one case carae tvp, sivse- that f son of one of the tavern keepers, who shot hb- lather wheu in the act of stabbing Has wife, and was acquitted for so doing. Also, in the town of Yioelaod, which has a population of abotu 10.000, but where uo liquor is sold, the only magistrates are two. eoa stables, whose aaaual expenses do not exceed 75 per year, and who have lately riucd because they have ab solutely nothing ti do. Pr. Willard Parker made a distinc tion between sin and crime, -the latter being a transgression of human law. It could be proved,. (1) that the alco hol was m brain poison; (2) that it is produced physical diseases ; (3) that it deadened natcrra? affection, subverted ctnicieccr, paralyzed: the will, and damaged easoaj (4) that it is let loose the baaer propensities, making its devotee temporarily insane. The specubtiye and extortionate ! spirit engendered in Vienna by the j Exposition has horn it natural fruit. The tide of isitors has ebbi, leaving landlords and lodgeing house keepers a'randed. A panic of considerable mai; litade has followed the inflation, of the past wrewth. Old and respectable bank ing houses hate given way; one hun dred failures a day or something to talk of; and the losses will foot up to aot less than three hundred millions flourins, which, considering that the pa-ate of 18G9 exhibited a deficit of niy twiBy-five aailiioa?, is rather ini Binderate. The iwmediale carrse of the panic appears to have been that the Viennese bad over estimated the influx of visitors and the prices they would submit to pay. As a consequence, from the third or fourth day, having had a taste o what they were to expect, the crow J fell off, and the monster hotelsy erec ted on speculation in view of the rush from May to November, stand comparatively empty, iastrad of having four compe tors for every room at extortionate rates. If the correspondents of the Londen Times and JSyew3 are to be believed, the Viennese have driven away thousands of stranger? by extor tionate price, and h?.ve, prevented thousands more who intended a trip to Vienna from going there. Indeedt the correspondents of both journals have frankly advised the English pub- lie loiccpaway, at least ior toe pres eat ST. PAUL. ITEMS.
