Culture Needed by Farmers.
The question returns. May not the
average tanner of to-day give more
time to the cultivation of his mind and
heart, and will it not pay? We all
know how pressing are thctluties of the
farmer, especially in the busy season,
'i'ho iiiotto seems to be. that "we must
r:se up early, sit up late, and eat the
bread of carefulness, in order to make
our ends meet, at .the end of the year.
Our bodies are jaded and fatigued; our
minds partake of the same feeling; we
hardly Cud time to read, and scarcely
to write to a friend, and, when we meet
a townsman and engage in conversation
on earrcnt topics we led humiliated
to find how stupid and ignorant we
are.
Jow, I claim that this state of things
ought uot to be. if our business
makes us slaves, dwarfing our minds,
blunting our letter sensililitits, inca
pacitating us fur the duties or gocjd and
useful citizeus in the body politic aud iu
the community generally, I am Dot
disposed to blame our sons and daugh
ters for choosing a different calling. If
our business is a bondage to us, neces
sarily, we are not tote blamed for
seeking to change it or, abandoning it
altogether.
Agriculture is certainly an honorable
calliug and it should receive the respect
due to it, and its representatives should
be able to advocate its claims and
defend its interest?. There is no rea-

son in thenature of things why a far
mer should be boorish any more than a
merchant or mechanic. J here is no
reason why the average farmer should
not be as well informed on the current
questions of the day, whether social
political or otherwise as the average
best specimens of humanity., farmers
need culture and what I mean by
culture is that cultivation of those
better parts of us which will mark us
gentleman and ladies in the true sense
the term not the shoddy sort, but the
true article.
This culture comes from
ii
reading, from associating .with the
pure and good, from the contemplation
of high and noblo things, from travel,
from communion with God as seen in

Perhaps our views of duty need cor
recting. We owe it to ourselves, to cur
posterity and to our country, o n.ake

and, to this end, self deuial may have
to bo exercised: It may be necessary
to (forego some of the emoluments in
order to bring into play the latent
powers of the mind, for it is mind, or
the exercise of the intellect, which
moves the world. Kducate the farmers
and you at once make them a power.
And, by education I do not ncctfa
rially niean that technically so called,
which is acquired only in schools.
Yhile I would not disparage in the
)f.pst the best culture the schco!s can
give, it will nol do to wait for a genera,
tion of learned farmers to come on the
stage. The education wo need and
must htive to redeem our calling from
reproach is that wMeh will give us
more skill to adapt mean3 to the end
sought. And this implies a tolerable
knowledge of the soil;, how plants
grow ; how to improve our grains
and plants our stock, our farm imple.
ment &c. &c. It implies also a knowl
edge of supply and demand of our
products, and so far as may be the
principles of political economy the
relations of capital and labor the rela
tions of free trade or protection to the
general industry of the country, aad
go ' on. These things arc required to
- make farming a profession of suc
cess. Then as a class,, to have the
influence in community our calling
deserves, our business must be con
ducted according to the rules of
strict integrity. We must be truth
ful in works as well as words no sham
either in tillage or sales.
And, besides, there is another item
which adds uot a little to the farmer's
standing and influence. Why is it
that a countryman lean be picked out
'of the crowd in any of our large cities,
and made the victims of pickpockets
and blacklegs generally 7 Thcro is
a certain green simplicity about him,
an awkwardness in his moyemcnts that
marks him a eon of the soil. Now a
certain frankness and simplicity arc
highly commendable, a,nd when these
are joined to a proper culture of the
mind and heart they mako aoue of tho
Terrible Accident a Number of Persons
Drowned iu Hock River.
Dixon, 111. May 4, A terrible accident
involving a fearful loss of life, occurred
here this afternoon, while the rito of
baptism was being administered to a
number of recent converts to the IJaptist
chuches here, at a point in Kock River
just below the trestle iron bridge.
About 200 persons, including many
ladies and a number of childern had
gathered on the bridge to witness the
ceremony, when suddently tho bridge
gave way and precipitated its living
freight into tho stream below. The
scene which ensued wa 8 indiscribably
terrible, as Jhe struggling victims
endeavored to free themselves from the
ruins of the bridge, and "from each
other. Large crowds on the banks
rushed wildly to and fro, many cf
them so distracted with terror as to be
unable to render any assistance; others
more self possessed, speedily brought
ropes, planks and boats, and went
nobly to work. Some of those who
were on the bridge when it fell were
so neai the ends that they were able to
reach the bank with out assistance,
while others were forturatly within
reach of those on shore. Up to G V. M
thirty-two bodies had been taken in

The general estimate of the number

bodies were recovered before dark, and
five other bodies floated don past
tho.se engaged at the wreck, and have
uot yet been recovered. There are
supposed to be at least fifty
bodies still unfound: most of
them, it is thought, arc under the
wreck of the bridt'O
