It would be well for all those who have a devire to have a free school to turn out. Let there be a full attendance so that there may be a fair express ion of the will of the people of the district in the regard to the matter. The Slight of the State to Maintain Public Schools. A very strong article on this subjecf appears in the March number of the American Journal of Education .and in the present phase of the discussioL on 'Cumpul.xory" andfother methods Education, will, undoubtedly, attract popular attention. The Juarntd which th ia month comes to us with a handsome now heading has alroady taken a high rank on our lift of exchanges, and with such artiales as we ob serve, on 44 The Proper Building and Equip ment of School-Houses," "The System of Count Superintendence," and wither others evi dently calculated to help teachers in their work, and to bring the people to a better un derstanding of it, is makiug fcr itself a really national charactor. Applegatp, who pa.?ed through tins place ou I uesday : last, we learn that Long Jim, one ot the Indians indicted by the Grand Jury of Jackson county, for the murder ot" settlers on Lost river, was recently captured at Yainax by Capt. O. ) App'egatc, who immediately turned him over to Gen. Gillem , U. S. A. at Van Bremer's, in California. It appears that Jim had been severely wounded in the arm at the battlo ot the Lava Bed, and had stealthily made his way to Yainax, hoping to be able to remain there undisturbed until ho got entirely well. A friendly Indian however, " blowed " on hini : he was arrested, put in irons, taken south of the Oregon line, and placed in charge of the military. We think he should have been turned over to tho civil authorities of Jackson county, to be dealt with according to law. From the Statesman : A mail by the name of C. Marshcr was arrested Gervais, a few days since on a charge of incendiarism. He was held to appear at the next term of Court, under 8500 bonds, and failing to get the re- ouired signatures was committed to jail lie yesterday found a bondsman and was set at liberty.
