SFIue rrgon fiu blir.a n. DALLAS, SATURDAY, JUNE 29. The Poei and the Proof Header Ah ! here it is I'm famous now An author and a poet ! It really U in print! Yo rod a I How proud I'll be to Uow it ! Aud gentle Auna! What a thrill Will animate her breast, To read these ardent lined, and know, To whom they are addressed. Why, bless my soul ! here's something strange What can the paper mean By talking of the graceful brooks That gander o'er tho green I And here a t instead of r, Which makes it tippling rill; We'll seek the shad, instead of shade, And hell, insteadof hill. They look so what ? I recollect, 'Twas sweet and then 'twas kind. And now to think, the stupid fool For bland has printed blind, Was ever such provoking work ! 'lis curious by-tho-by, How any thing is rendered blind by giving it an eye. Hast thou no tears ? the t's left out, Hast thou no ears, instead, I hope that thou art dear, is put 1 hope that thou art dead. Who ever raw in such a space So many blunders crammed? Those gentle eyes bedim mod, is spelt Those gentle eyes bedawmed. The color of the roso, is nose j Affection is affliction ; I worn er if the likeness holds Ja fact as well as diction ? Thou art a frieud, the r is gone Who ever would have deemed That such a trifling thing could change A friend into a. fiend. Thou art the same is rendered lame It really is too bad ! And here because an i is out My, lovely maid is mad ; They drove her blind by poking in ; An eye-r-a proees new ;; And now they've gouged it out again, And made her crazy, too. Let's stop and recapitulate : I've dammed htr eyes, that's plain I've told ber she's a lunatic, And blind, and deaf and lame. Was ever such a horrid bash In poetry or prose ? I've said she was a fiend, and praised The color of her node, I wi.h I had that editor About a half a minute; I'd bang bim to his heart's content, And with an h begin it; I'd. jam his body, eyes and bones, And spell it with a d. And seud him to that hill of bis He spells it with an e. Sunday Heading, The wise fortify themselves hy reason; fools by despair. As it sometimes rains when the sun is shining, so there way bo joy in a paint's heart when there are tears iu his eyes. Those who are bound for heavem must be willing to stem against the storm; and must not do as the most do, but as the best da Mental pleasures never cloy ; unlike those of the body, they are iucreased by repetition, approved by reflection and strengthened by enjoyment. Always endeavor to learn something from the information of those thou con versest with, aod to put thy company upon those subjects they are best able to speak of. . I have always preferred cheerfulness to mirth. The latter I consider as an art, the former as a habit of the mind. Mirth is short and transient ; cheer fulness fixed and permautnt. Ad dison. God loves to have us pray with ear nestness. The best proof of earnestness is simplicity. Better iu God's sight are the broken but heart felt utterances of a mere child, than the high-sounding utterance of some who think them selves wonderful in prayer. Ten minutes of weak repining will 'plunge a brave heart into the depths of un happiness as suddenly as a thunder storm will overcast a clear, summer sky. The only way to live is to cast away trouble and contentions, which cannot be cured by fretting. A thing that is done belongs to the past. In justice to the requirements of the present, and possibilities of the future, you cannot look back and make yourself wretched over things which cannot be undone. Time, the most precious of all posses sioo8, is commonly the least prized. It is, like health, regretted when gone, but rarely improved when present. We know it is irrecoverable, yet throw it wantonly away. We know it is fleet, yet fail to catch tho current moment. It in the space of life, and while we never properly occupy its limits, we nevertheless murmur at its narrowness. It is the field of exertion, which we continually leave fallow and yet sorrow over our stinted harvest. The fact is, life is undervalued by a great majority of mankind. It is not made half as much of as should be the case. Where is the mau or woman who accomplishes one tithe of what might be done 1 Who cannot look back upon opportunities lost, plans unachieved, thoughts crushed, aspirations unfulfilled and all caused by the lack of the neces sary and possible effort? Now aod then a man stands aside from the crowd, la bors earnestly, steadfastly, confidently, and straightway becomes iaruous for greatness of some sort. The world won ders, admires, idolizes; yet it only il lustrates what each may do if he takes bold of life with a purpose fr'acts aistl E'aucics. Never trust to time Time will tell A grave subject A body iu a dis secting room. Wise men learu more by fools than do fools by wise meu. A Spanish proverb says : One "I did" is worth two "I wish 1 hud." When women como to sit in the jury box, infants may become criers in court. Au artesian wll is to be Hld at auction The purchaser to remove it Virginia, says the New York World reports Timothy as promising a good crop, but say nothing about Paul. "Mr. Speaker, I straddle that blind," was the phrase iu which a poUr-play-iug Culifuruiau legislator seconded the motion. The Pall Mall Gazette says of a cer tain Irish court, that it is never so sure to be wrong as wheu the judges are unanimous. A fractious wife threw a bottle ot hair reuewer at her husband's head, at which lie- exclaimed "Wo must part, the dye is cast" It has been decided, that when a man so far forgets himself as to bite off another individual's nose, he ought to be bound over to keep the piece. "Leave you, my friend," said a tipsy fellow ciingtug to a lamp-post on a dark night; Heave you in a condition not to take care of yourself! Hie, never!" Dick pays no compliments to lively Sail; She says she dont expect 'cm from that ijuarter ; "You're ti-thinm fr a uouipiuuenl, my girl;" "No Dick, indued not in s uch atiallu water." A youthful aspirant for epistolary honors wrote the following to his little friend : "Dear Johuuy 1 thought 1 would write you a letter. Answer this.' Alfred Jingle's dog is surpassed in New liedford, where they have a pointer that came to a dead stand still before a door plate bearing this inscription : A Cartridge." Few men would attempt to dry damp gunpowder iu a kitchen stove. A man iu Cat.ada, did His afflicted family would be glad of any information u.-j to his whereabouts. A Subscriber writes to an editor, 'l don't waut our paper any louger." To which the editor replied, 4vl wouldn't make it any longer, if you did; its preseut length fcutts me Very well." The following is a veritable transcript from the record of a will admitted to probate in the State of New Yor : "1 bequeath my body to the grave, my soul to its maker, and the remainder ut my property to my wile." A man called another an extortioner for suing him. "Why, my friend," re plied tho mau who brought &uit, I did it to oblige.'' "To oblige me, indeed how so '!" "Why to oblige you to pay me,"was the reply. An exchange relates, that during a cold uight a lady acquaintance put her two boys iu bed iu & cold room, tucked them up and sat down on the edge of the bed to hear them say their prayers, Johnny agfd seven, got through all right and cuddled up to Willie, aged the, who had just commenced to say his prayer. Presently Willie began to hurry, the words came, faster than lie could distinctly utter them, and the prayer ended; thus : "I pray the Lord my soul to keep amen take your hand off from me or I'll warm your tar lor you." Johnny was tickling him. Kosambcau, i. French actor of note, was ouce playing at Anjou, wheu the curtain rose to a single spectator. The actor stepped forward and addressed the audience: "My dear sir, did you come to sec the play, or to see Kosam bcau ?" "To see Kosambeau," was the prompt reply. "Well I am Kosambeau. Don't you tnink we shall enjoy the eve ning much better together at a neigh boring cafe than if you compel me to play to you, who should be a man of wit, in a piece which a poor one at best and in which contrary to my usual cus tom, I am only ordinary?" Certainly I do," replied the audience, "for 1 hur ried my dinner to get hero in Season ; we will go and finish it." And they went, The following questions are proposed for Shakcspercau scholars to answer: Did tho "books in the running brooks contain "flowiug seutenccs V If the "three thousand ducats well', of Shylock was an artesian one ? If, when Itichard saw "the sun of York" there was any air apparent? If tho "Sermons in stones" weren't hard reading? If those "who stood upon tho order of their going'; at Macbcth's supper did not have to set out without further orders ? What Bonquo "called on" Macbeth for, if there was no speculation in those eyes ? When Richard refused to let the "coffin pass," did ho order it up? Was it waist timo when Puck "put a girdlo round tho earth in forty minutes-?" Was Ariel in tho newspaper busi ness wheu he said "I will bo corres pondent to command ?"
