The other night as we lay musing, And our weary brain confusing .O'er, the topics of tho Jay, Suddenly we. heard a rattling As of a serried host a-battl ing, As they mingled in tho fray. " What is that?" wo crie.1 upstarting, And into the darkness darting. Slap I we ran against the door. "Oli. 'tis imthing." Edward grumbled, A? o'er the hugo arm chair v stumbled, " 'lis a bug uud nothing mure." Then said we; onr anger vising, (Tor we thought it so surprising That a hug should tliuw offend,) "Do you ihink a smill insect, dr, Thus would all the air infect, .sir? No, 'tis not a bug, my friend." Njw becoming sorely frihtenc!. 11. .un 1 our waists our &ni w i tig' tnsol, And p)itn our coat and nut When, into the darkness peering. Saw with trembling an i much tearing. The gluing eyes of Thomas Cat. With astonishment and wouder We gazed upon this son of thuuder. As he sat upon the flxr, When a resolution taking, And a rapid movement making, 1 oj we opened wide the Jjor. ''Now clear out!" we hoarsely fhouted, As o'trhead our butts were flouted, 4,Take your presence fruai our ii or.'' Then with air and mL-ii majestic, TLid dear creature called d ou-tie, Made Lis eit through the dour. Ma le Lis exit without growling, Neither wa? bis v ice beard yuwling, Not a single word he .-aid, And with feeling much olated T escape a do tu so fat.;d, Slowly we went back to bud. The bu.inc?? pru.s cct.s of the c'otmcry ou the lust ot 'cpfenilior were much more favorable th in at the lirst of the same month last year- Thou a hu-. w.r w:is raging in Kurnpe, and effect upon some of the important businos intercuts of our country was unfavorable. It precipitated u pan our markets commodities which did nt belong here, and can---! constant .nd unlooked-for il actuations in ptues, hv which heavy, and sometimes ruinous losses w-2re sttjtaincl by the dealers. Cotton declined, th:: advam-ed seven cents a pound. i-'i-rar ;.dvau(.' d, and declined nearly two dollars a hnael; wheat i.dvanced fifty c. nts, an i dccliu ed thirty five cents per i'tiMiol ; r ik advanced four dollars, nu. declined ui:j dollars per barrel. j t:.-s, ait: f.mia of the . fluctuations in t!i? tna'ki fs. and added to this was the eifjet on tin; is changes and the ttjoHi'V nnrki t. S.nie money was nude, p rh rt4. Jui a urea? deal was certainly lo-,r. This year the pro-peel is different., l'eace has been res tori d, and eonnnerce has pretty nearly settled back to its normal condition, and thuo is nothing to produce extraordinary fluctuations in the markets. The prospect is for a year of moderate, safe and protitable tusi cess; as, while as much money will not be made, as much will not be lost. This will be the case especially with the dealers of the three great staph s of the country, cotton, breadstuff's and provi pious; but so clo-ely are they connected with all the other mercantile and .-pro illative interests of the country, that the whole trade may bo jud.d by these; and as the markets for these gtaples is now iu a decidedly healthy Condition, the business prospects of the country may be estimated accordingly. New Jersey Mechanic. . Our Democratic friends who are so deeply moved by the spectacle ui' a political Convention held in a Cnited States Court room in New Orleans 1 have short memories. The eireum stauce is denounced by them as an act of unprecedented impropriety. An act of impropriety it certainly was, but it is lioi unprecedented. In 1808, during the Know-nothing excitement, which racd very fiercely in New Orleans, a political Convention in the Custom House, and was surrounded by United States troops j but the Convention in that case was e Democratic one, and the troops obeyed the orders of James 5ucbanan. We do not ourselves approve of the resort of the Republican Con vention to the public buildings ; but if vre did, we Should have a well defined Democratic 'precedent. JVeio York Times. The gallant candidate of the Ohio lletmblicans for Governor, (ion. E. F. Toyes, is following sharply on the heels of 3Ir. Ewliip. At ('olurnhiis, on Wednesday, he opened the campaign in a brisk speech exposing Hwing's financial absurdities, lie specially took up the alleged advantages reaped by the national banks, and cited cases in which private banks in Cincinnati, doing business side by side with na tional banks, paid no local or State tax, while their rivals paid five and sixty ficven one hundredths per cent. Gen. Noyes contested Ewiu's system of irre deetnable paper currency by arguments quoted 'from John T. Hoflman. In the course of his speech he took strong ground for general amnesty uud revenue and civil service reform. When a person declares his brain is on tire, is it etiquette to blow it out. The latest bit of popular music is called "Uury your dog in the garden." Let the doctor remember that a roll ing Livingstone gathers no moss. A chippewa chief, who visited Chi cago lately, pronounced the weather -big hot." Lean ed persons call a locust liicadi sep'emdeiunn, but it does seem to be frightened. Capt. Hall's expedition has effected an entrance into the best Arctic circle.
