Bowles's foolish assumption, in liin cor
respondence with Mr. David Dudley
Field, that a lawyer has no ri;lit to act
professionally on behalf of a man whom
any considerable portion of the commu
nity may condemn, was given tho uther
.evening by Mr. William Alhm i'uttcr,
while lecturing befure the University
Law School on the relations of lawyer

Butler said :
" The worst criminal in the world i
entitled totho aid of counsel, in order
to secure him a fair trial; and the foot
ing on which a lawyer stand while re
presenting the lepil rights of his client
is wholly separated from the standing
of his client in his moral or social rela
tions. In other words, while rcpre?
senting his client as to his claims and
obligations under the law of the land,
the lawyer has nothing to do with his
obligations to any other law, nor is he
in the least degree responsible for them.
Let him be as radically vicious as the
love of money will make him ; let his
conscience be seared and desiccated by
a half century of dealing in dry good;
though he may have hung around the
most disreputable corners and been
dragged out of the dirtiest pools in
"Wall Street; though he may have'
broken both tables of the moral law j
yet the lawyer must not forget that he
neither made him nor the statutes
which he is entitled to plead, and he
hasas clear a right to defend his prop
erty from execution as a physician has
to save hi3 body from disease and
death."
Mr. Butler disposes of Mr. Bowles's
hastyjudgment in the particular matter
in reference to which he had attacked
Mr. Field as follows :
" Public opinion can only properly
and finally pronounce upon what is un
disputed or established beyond any
reasonable doubt, and accepted by com
mon consent as notorious lact. It may
assume, in respect to any particular
case, rightly or wrongly in advauce of
any legal investigation, or of any testi
mony which would be competent if tes
ted by the plainest rules of evidence,
that the client is corrnpt; that the
Court and counsel are corrupt; but it
cannot proceed to judgment-in a case
involving the relation of lawyer and
client to each other, to the judiciary,
and to the public, so long as any cle
ment or doubt remains certainly not
bo long as issue is taken upon the maiti
question of fact, and the merits ot the
case arc entaigled in the meshes of
newspaper controversy and discuss
Bion. There is no ground for suspicion that
Mr. Butler has any personal interest in
Jaying down ihese principles. His
reputation is that of a perfectly upright
and conscientious able lawyer. And
jet it is proposed to discipline Mr.
Field lor acting just as Mr. Butler vir
tually says he would act under the
earne circumstances.

body, and the miser and the fogy are
benefited thereby ; yet they will say
that the editor's paper is one of no ac.
count, will not advertise or take the pa
per, but will borrow it. Who wouldn't

Somewhere in Penn. there is a Pres
byterian clergyman whose nominal sal',
ary is $450 a year. But as it was six
months in arrears, the congregation de
termined togive him a donation party, to
help him along. It came off- the do
nation party did. '1 he entire flock was
on hand, but of the presents there were
only 0 rolling pins, a pen wiper, and a
quarter of a peck of dried apples, crop
of 1801. The minister, of course, had
to furnish refreshments ; and the com
pany not only discoursed 4 ham3, 3j
pounds of GO cent butter, and 13 loaves
of bread, but they ate up 2 pounds of
sugar and next winter's preserves. To
cr wn all, four spoons are missing. The
clergyman says ho wants to have just
one more donation party, and thenhe
will ejoae up business and begin life over
again as champion pauper at tho alms
hoB3. He is particularly down oo one

lent diet to keep the entire family for a
week and then laid up against the wall
pretending to feel rcligous, and singing,

It Is generally understood throughout Polk

South on the West Side jof the River, it will
open up a new era for .tbq citizens of tho coun
ties through which it will pass. Every man
can take his wife, leave the children with their
uncle, go to Portland and gather up a full list
of supplies, at a very trifling expense, and at a
figure far below country prices, providing there
were not merchants through the country up
with the times. But thenj will be plenty of live
men in tho arena. All the old fogies will have
to give way, buy themselves a littlo farm, and
retire to quiet life. This is not sarcastic, but
downright truth, as history of the past proves.
And I expect those that are now littlo children
will relate to their children in time hereafter
how that, in the oldun time, over there, on the
bill just across Salt Creek, at Ed. duffs old
Store House, M. M. Ellis j inaugurated the now
practice of selling goods at Portland prices,
and paid the freights himself. Come and fee
me. You shall be entertained in a first class
manner, with first class goods.
