The Silver Band, of Monmouth, will give a Concert in that place on Tuesday evening, March the 7 th, Mr. P. C. Sullivan has just returned from a trip to Portland and Kalama. He reports all lively on the Columbia. I. O. G. T. Mr. C. Baal, G. W. C. T., or ganized La Clede Lodge, No. 144, at M. M. Ellis's store on Salt Creek, Tuesday evening last M. M. Ellis, W. C. T. ; Miss E. Ellis, W. V. T. , Mr. C. Miller, S. ; J. K. Conner, F. S. ; Miss E. McCune, T. The Lodge organiicd with 26 charter members. Mr. Kracsid, a well known blacksmith, of Corrallif, has formed a co-partnership with Messrs. Richardson A Slover, wagon makers, of this place, for th purpose of starting a largo wagon and carriage factory here. They are all good workmen in their line, and will, doubtless, give satisfaction. Their advertise ment will appear in due time. Communications. , Again we have to remind our friends of our invariable rule never to print communications unless we know the name of the author. We have several sow which we would like to publish, but cannot violate a pos itive rule. As we hav said before, we do not publish names unless requested, but must know our authority. Some of our subscribers for Demorent't Monthly, we presume, are becoming anxiou about that magazine. We can assure the in that they will come ere long. We sent for one list, and last Monday we received the numbers to fill the order. Two days after sending that list we sent a second, and from those we have not yet heard, but are looking for returns by every mail. Dr. M, D. Merrick, State Locturer for the I. O. G.T., lectured in the M.E. Church on Sun day and Monday evenings. The attendance was good; and after the Monday evening lec ture, the Members of the Order adjourned to the Lodge Room of La Creole Lodge, No. 23, where nine persons were initiated, and an in teresting meeting held. A County Lodge was organized Monday afternoon by Dr. Merrick. John Bennett, of Salt Creek, in this county, was arrested and brought before Justice Stilus for trial on Tuesday last, on charge of stealing cattle. As the trial wound to a close, Bennett saw that his attorneys were not going to clear him, so he made an excuse to go out of doors and took " leg bail for security," and cleared himself. The Sheriff now offers one hundred dollars for his apprehension. See advertise ment in another column. " We learn that Mr. J. II. Bobbins, of Bethel, lias concluded to change his' combined Header jand Thresher to a Traveling Thresher, to ;ccompany a common Header. He thinks this .can be done with more saying of grain than to .combine the Header and Thresher in one ma chine. Queen Maria Vic toria, is dangerously ill with fever, at Ailis'i. Shu received the last sacraments. A later dispute!! s;iys the report prevails of the death of Queii Maria. Victoria. London, Feb. 21. China papers re, ceived by over land mail, report that an assault wa made upon Seward and his party during their visit Hong Foo. Washigton, Feb. 20. Senator Wil iams has reported . too bill giving set tlers in the Territories right to enter 1G0 acres of mineral land regardless of pre-emption laws. Senater Miller, of Georgia was to have been sworn in on the 24th. The Senate Southern Pacific Rail road bill has passed the House with Fremont, Dodge, Forney, Alcorn and 80 others as incorporators as before. The Joint High Commission will commence its labor next week ; all the English Commissioners are present and all the American members save Judge Hoar. The Canadian claims from Fe nian raids will probably come before them. The English Government are goiug to present these elaims for imme diate settlement. New York, Feb. 20. The steamship North America, from Rio Jenero," via St. Thomas, just arrived, brings news of the safe arrival of the Tennessee at San Domingo. New York, February G. Interior mills selling about 25c. per barrel less. There is no demand for export, and the local inde is quiet. The Emperor has sent the following dispatch to the Empress Augusta. "With a deeply moved heart, and gratitnde to'' God, I informe you that the preliminaries of peace have been signed. The Bordeaux Assembly roust yet ratify" London, Feb. 27. The Telegraph says Thiers has proposed the purchase of Luxemburg by France, and its transfer to Germany if Metz is restored. They will need no othct mediciue. Gleanings from State Exchanges. East of the mountains tho demand for fat beef cattle from Portland, Pa get Sound and Victoria is increasing rapidly. Last week a lot of potatoes was shipped from Portland to Corvallis where they readily sold for SI 50 per bushel. Won't Mr. Holladay hurry up the tvest side railroad, so that Benton county cau import her potatoes for less money. A surgical operation was performed last Wednesday npon a stage driver from Albany in Salem. It took more than five times as much chloroform to place him under its influence than the average of men. The medical students of the Institute atteuded to see the opt ration. i Mining. -A few "moon eyed Coles, tials" are mining on Cow Creek, in Douglas county, with very small pay. 'fhe Olilla mines are being worked to a Jimited extent. We have not heard a word about the beach mines in Curry county, for some time. The Uohema quartz mining proved to be a ''steam boat." An officer of Oakland, Douglas coun ty, arrived in Eugene City by Monday evening's stage in charge of a Dutch ingrate, going by the uame of Dr. Fos ey, whom he was taking to Albany to answer charges for obtaining money un der false pretences, lie borrowed 8250 of parties in Albany and then left. This Dr. is said to be the same individ ual who married ajoung girl in Port land a short time ago aud took her to Victoria and deserted her, leaving her without money and among strangers. We are about to forget to say, however that he escaped from the officer on Mun day night, and has uot beeu sec a since. Collision. Wc learn that a colli ion occurred on one of the switch track at Albany on Saturday.' We learn that the fireman being left in charge of the locomotive attempted the proee-s of shifting cars by means of switching off and on the main track. H iving got under headway with a train, in order to give the rear cars impetus to run some d stance after bo ng uncoupled, the lo comotive was switched off, running of course at coniderade speed. The tire man didn't shut off gtcam and put on brakes qbick enough, and the locomo tive coined with a box car standing on the switeh with sufficient f'uree to break tho latter considerably, and to knock the locomotive's head light "galley west.'' Nobody hurt the only damage being to property. Tho Oreyonlan elves an account of letters from Baker City, dated Feb. ID and 22d, which gives accounts of very ncn dtscovertes or silver loads on liurnt river, between 31 tiler's station and Old's Ferry. The ledges of which par ticular mention is made was discovered by the stage driver who drives on that route. There it great excitement at Ba ker City, and many arc going up to look for feet. One of the parties interesed had melted three ounces of rock, from which was obtained six cents worth of pure silver, The ledge is considered richer than anything ever discovered out side of White Pine. Capt. Fik, who has no interest will start for Burnt river in two or three days. The same letter give some account, too, of late discoveries of gold bearing quartz. In the midst of the sermon it attained so alarming height that the congregation sat in al.uost breathless awe. The preacher closed his note book, and stepping into one of tho wings of the desk, fell on his knees, and with much feeling and fine taste re peated. I ''.lark ! the Eternal rends the sky ! "Let us devoutly sing, to the praise and glory of God, this hymn, Old Hundred'' ,The whole congregation instantly arose and poured forth the sacred song, in which they were nobly accompanied by the organ, in a style of pious grand eur and heartfelt praise. By tho time the hymn was finished, the storm was hushed j ancl the sun, bursting forth, showed through the magnificent and brill mt arch of peace. The preacher resumed the desk and his discourse, with this opposite quotation ; "Look upon the rainbow; praise Him' that made it. Very beautiful it is in the, brghtness thereof 1 It compasseth the heaven about with a glorious circle; and the haads bf tho Most High have bend ed it."
