A New York dispatch re cently related how two tl kind were cauzht. It said that Georee W. Amis came all the way from Maple valley. Wash bnv some conterfeit money. II reached New York yestcrdu morning and promptly paid $110 for a brick in a 1hx. which the green-goods speculators gave him The box was supposed to he til fee with counterfeit money. Anns was proprietor of a saw mill out in Mania Valler. His mill burnei - , down and when he rebuilt it : few weeks ago it burned again He was in hard luck and low spirits when a green-goods circular fell into his hands. He entered into correspondence with the swindlers and following their directions, came to New Yuk by the Baltimore A Ohio road. Just before the train reached Jersey City, a young man entered the car and then sat down with Ames re marking as he did so, '"Churchill No. 8," tnis being the countersign' that the swindlers bad sent him bv mail. After reaching New York they went by a very round about course to a diny little room where Ames was introduced t an old man, who gave him a bundle of "counterfeit" notes to examine. He Legotiated for $11( 0 of bills and handed over 140 tor it. He watched the old man closely as hi packed the rolls of bills in a small pine box. The box was full when Ames was told to w rite his name and address on a slip of paper Then a neatly wrapped parcel was given to him, and ho hugged it under his arm. "Take him to the train," said the old man : ''you had better not take him hack to the same depot; our goods are so good that the police would like too well to get their clutches on some of them." The messenger took Ames to the Mott Haven station. It aa about 11 o'clock yesterday morning when they reached there. A me.-1 bought a ticket to Little Rock. Aik. The messenger then sug gested a parting drink and they separated on the best of terms. Presently a man entered the station with a very similar package under bis arm. A shrewd lookup young man was guiding him ax Ames had been escorted to the station. In an instant it Hashed across Ames' mind that the coun tryman was a fellow victim, and be walked up to him and whispered, "You have been bit just as I was." The countryman did not understand the warning, but the messenger took alarm ami was out of sight when Policeman Walsh ran in to see what the noise was all alxmt. Ames' precious package of brick lay on tie floor where be had dropped it whin he seized the green-goods stteier. The amazed countryman did not yet fully comprehend that he had been swindled until he opened his box. It was rilled with a neatly cut bulk of green paiers. This second victim eaid he was Charles Nyberg, and that he kept a grocery in Jamestown, N. Y. He hail paid $2S5 for his box full of green paper, and had expected to tind $J2U0 in counterfeit monrv in it when he got home. Policeman Walsh took the victims and their collection of green paper and brick to the Morrisania polite station. Nyberg had been so anx'n ais to buy all the "green good' he could pay for that he did not have t nough money left to pay his fare home. Ames said he had secured a re turn ticket. The two compared notes and concluded that they had been swindled by the same gang. They were sent down to tell their adventures to Police Inspector Byrnes. the habit of roasting their ores in heaps. The fumes from these heaps, added to tho.jc from the smelters, make the town ery pick I v. and an ordinance was pa.'se 1 to suppress the heap-roast- itM' irces3. I lie mine owners, however, who are indifferent to the tlieHs of their practices on human life, are lighting the ordinance.witb the result of piovoking the citizens to forcible action to suppress the nuisance. As the people are very determined the mine owners will probably recede from their position but r.o mere showing that they were endangering the lives of the whole community would have in duced them to desist from the cheap process of roasting ore in hsap?, lest dividends might be in terfered w ith. Tut tyir.pathy of the people of the entire United Mates will go out to Cyrus Field in his hour of trouble. It will be much more active in force from ilie fact that Mr. Field has been the soul of honor in all of Ids dealings all his life time, anil has been one of the mo-t active and eiiicient workers for the benefit of the country in the entire nation. That his property is gone and sickness has overtaken him in the closing years of his life is deplorable and doubly more so that the direct result of hU losses is due to the fraudulent action of his own son. However much, may be the feeling in the direction of sympathy for Mr. Field, the actions of the son should not be condoned, but he should be held responsible until the full measure of truth is known and justice meted out. A. R. Chapman, of this city, has the agency of the Canadian Pacific raiiw.iy company, and will sell tickets over that line from Albany to all points East.
