Yet he did not receive a majority on the pop ular vote. In 1864, when be was re-elected, the Civil war absorbed attention, and in 186S and 1872 the memories of the war and problems of reconstruction insured the elec tion of Grant. In 1876 the tariff question waa adroitly handled by Mr. Tilden in connection with the question resumption, the latter being the more prominent, and he was barely beaten. In 1880, for the first time in twenty years the tariff became the more prominent issue, and a scanty plurality ol Un popular vote for General Garfield was the result. In 1S84 personal antagonisms to Mr. Blaine affected the verdict to some extent, and yet, after allowance for the larger fraudulent majorities for Mr. Cleveland in Southern states, the popular vote for protection ap peared relatively greater than in 1880. In the election of 18SS, allowing for the suppression of freedom at the south, the plurality for President Harrison and protec tion waa larger than had ever been given for that cause. Local issues the diversion of the farmers' al liance, and the neglect of republi cans to vote, gave democrats their victory in 1890, and there was not a single state in which the tariff issue was as distinctly made as it has been in Ohio this year. I town to the year 1890 the protective policy had been growing in popu lar strength for thirty years. Ohio would indicate that it is still growing. If democrats prefer to pin their faith to elections of last year they are welcome. New York Tribune. ceeded very considerably that of 18'.K). In lSitl the catch of seals by Victorian scaier was -r.J,4!$, and increase f it.'JIMi over the catch of 18!H). In view of the agreement between the United States and Great Britain to restrict the taking of fur seals in Behring sea until further notice, this must be regarded as a very queer sort of close season, at least in eo far as the Victorian sealers are concerned. It is a significant fact to the farmers of this country that Eu rope bought from us in the four months ended October 31 bread- stuffs of all kinds to the amount of $101,158,150. In the like months last year the export of 'treadstulls were only :5r.,0O7,473. In bushels the figures for wheat alone for the above period are: 18!'0, l.V:U'. 13!; 1891, 04,503, 1S7. There is bo much opposition to the appointment of Joe Simon to the position of the vacant V. S circuit judgeship that the honor able gentleman's chances are not so bright, in spite of the recoin mendation cf the Oregon delegates in congress. It would be discredit to Oregon and a dis grace to the bench to appoint such a dishonest politic Unites as Joe Simon is known to be. This tie mand, according to latest esti mates, will be 455,000,000 bushels The surplus of this country will fall far below 300,000,000 bushels. But besides the foreign demand for wheat there is a deficiency of 335, 000,000 bushels in the supply oi rye. Prices will therefore keep up to good figures in our markets, at least nntil the next harvests are in sight. The wheat crop of 1891 is the greatest in our history ; the tobacco crop is the greatest. The corn crop of 1891 is the second greatest, and the cotton crop is equal to the greatest in quantity and the equal of the best in quality. The veg etable crop was never better, and the fruit crop was never eo pro line. The orange crops of Florida and California are so fine import tions of oranges from the Mediter ranean are about shutout. a the Ssnator Doi.ru has intro duced thus early in the senate coast defense bill, which is same as that introduced and reported by bim from his coast defense I committee in previous congresses. It appropriates $1-3, 000,000 and provides for an elabor ate plan of coast defense. Senator bolph evidently intends to keep the matter before the public as Ioiigakhe is in congress. Tus greatest cotton blockade ever known is now existing at places along the Little Rock & Fort Smith railroad. The road is a feeder ol the Missouri Pacific. The company cannot furnish cars for transportation of cotton, and in subsequence thousands of bales have 'accumulated. This condi tion has existed since the cotton season opened, producers and buyers finding it impossible to ship the staple to market.
