The committee on stieits and public properly asked for further time upon the change 01 grade on First street, which was granted. A resolution in relation to an assessment on certain lots and parts of lots for graveling certain streets in the city adjacent to the lots was read and adopted. The city atto-ney, W. R. I?ilyeu, at the request of the mayor, ex pressed an opinion in reference to the Australian ballot law, to the el'ect that the law does n t apply to inur.icipali'it s. No action was taken, but the election will be j;ar:ied on under the old law. SHEDD AND YICIUITT. Mrs. Mcliride, wife of J. A. Bride, who lives three miles Mc west of here, died Wednesday, Nov. Ilt!i, and was br.ii.d on the 12th. Her husband has the sympathy of his neighbors in his bereavement. Mr. Ilenson gave a series of temperanee lectures at the M. E. church last week. There will be pleaching at the new church next Sabbath, the L'.'nd. at 7 r. ., instead of 4 and services eveiy two weeks during the w inter at the s.ane hour. Short Crop of Hog. Edward Thomas, of Umatilla county, has been sentenced to one year and a half in the penitentiary for blackmail. It was clearly proven that Thomas tried toextort m niey from Dr. (J. W. King, of Athena; also that he had foully slandered a lady whose character is far above rejtroach. Tao men named Hamilton and Anderson were arrestid in the mountains below Elgin this week. Clark, of The Dalles, who has just returned from the Cascade mountains above the forks of Hcod river, says the snow is three or four feet tleep, and there are signs ' of bear, deer and elk. Mrs. Amelia R. Combes com menced suit in the circuit court of Lane county, Or., against B. (J. Van Houten, of Spokane, Wash , for the sum of $3150, with interest thereon at the rate of 8 prr cent since the year 1877.
