It is a liiaaculiue assumption that the inventors of th'a world are the result of maaculiae brains, but Harpers Itazar says that while those who decry wnuien use as one of their chief argu'iienu the state ment that women liave no inven tive faculty, women, it seen. 8, from the actual official returns, go straight on inventing. Nut to speak of Catherine Greene, the wife of General Nathaniel U:t ne. who undoubtedly invented t'te cotton-gin and whose second hus band induced her t) abate her fear of ridicale and claim an interest in it, or of Mrs. Walton' achieve ments with noiae-deafeniiig, with smoke-burning, and with similar experiments, theie are many other invention by women of iial im portance. One woman has in vented a method of converting a barrel of oil into ten thousand cubic feet of gan ; another has in vented a sewing machine that needs no threading; others have invented the ruilling and imilting attachments to such machine?, and arrangements for sew ing duck and leather. One such attainment made a fortune for Miss Helen Blanchard; and a new baby car riage brought to its inventor, a woman, the sum of a hundred and fifty thousand dollar. Another woman has invented a superior street-sweeper; another, a spin ning wheel carrying as many as forty threads; another, a screw crank for steamships; and a chain elevator, a horse shoe machine, a reaper and a mower, a danger signal and so on without end, owe their existence to the biaius. of women, it was Hiss Knight who invented a complicated machit e for making the equate bottomed paper bag, and refused fifty thou sound dollar for the patent, and who also invented another ma chine that does the work of th'rty pairs of hands in folding these bags. It is Mrj. Aimstrong who has invented a machine for feediri: cattle on traits; it is Josephine . Davis who has invented an arrange ment of lamps and rubber cloth for a hot vapor bath at home ; Mr Beastly, machine for turning out complete barrels by the hundred; Anna Conolly, a practical lire escape ; Mrs. Bailey, an attachment j W beds by means of winch ttie patient can raise and lower him self. And among all these inven tions none is perhap-t of a more pleasing and grateful character than that of Mrs. Nancy Johnson, who inventad the lirst ice cream freezer, bat who, not so w ise as some of her sisters, sold her patent for fifteen hundred dollars, all ice creams previous to her crank hav ing been made by a slow and laborious stirring. Aul this is merely skimming over the surface and selecting a few instances that most easily strike the eye, leaving a multitude unmentioned. Nor are these inventions confined, it is evident, to the walks in lilt) most rir . laminar io women, as, among others, the grain elevator, the screw-crank for steamships, ami the barrel-maker testily. And while the existence of all these patents and their results oiijjht to confound the careless speaker w ho thinks so lightly of feminine capability, it dots something far more important in showing how greatly enricht.1 the w hole world will be when the feminine mind a well as the nias-tilinn is fully brought to the work. Tiik ehnlition of the Louisville j Courier-Journal, in speaking of the new stales recently admitted to the I'nion calling them JOttm' boroughs, because their strength will he given to the republicans at the next general election, is as paitisan and one sided as is its advocasy of the a-.-tun of the Michigan democrats in districting the presidential electors of that state, and seeking by a gerry mander to secure democratic electors- The cloven foot is to apparent, and the Michigauders may tind out m the end that they have manufactured a boomerang to vex themselves with. Presidential electors should bs by the state and not by district. :WE HAVE NOT AN: ELEPHANT ON OUR hands,: PlainfiblD ! It was thought that the tower j uusiness ior me Lii:cago world s fair was decided in the negative, j but late notes upon the subject i say not. It is not much of a towtr hut it is said that the pier, ex- lending 1,000 feet into the lake, is already completed. At its cx-l-emity, in place of the Casir.o, wi'l he erected a tower 250 feet high. Th's w ill be of iron, covered with stalT, and will resemble a lighthouse in appo?. ranee. From its summit electrical displays of exceeding brilliancv will he made, ami by means of electric "search lights" the grounds, or any partic ular portion of them, can be tluodid with light on fete nights.
