JOTTINGS ABOUT TOWN. W. F. lad returned yesterday from a business trip to 1 yens. There are live hundred and fifteen pupils enrolled in the public schools. The Noss Jollities are the only comedy family carrying an original "Bung-Town Band" as seen in "A Quick Match." The Juvenile Band made their first appearance n the ttreet last evening, and played some very well rendered selections. Mr. Joseph Nixon, of Lebanon, was in the city yesterday, on his way to Kastern Washington, whither he goes for a few weeks for health ami recreation trip. Marshal Hoffman took the de serter back to Vancouver yester day, and will receive the reward offered for him. The o her one was of such an ancient dale that the reward had lapsed. The Ladies Aid Society will meet this afternoon at 2 :.;() -. m, with Mrs. C. W. Sears on Fifth street between Jackson and Jeffer son. A full attendance is desired as theie will le business of im portance. AH participants in the Cantata of "Belshazzar" are earnestly re quested to meet in the. college building to-night at 7:3i) fur rehearsal, also to vote on the date f preientation which must be immediately fixed. The Wheat Market. There appears to be consider able divergence in the price of wheat at different Willamette Valley points, depending larg-Iy upon the present need" of buyers. Win,, i mrtti in AlK'ittv ' cents. That figure was also offered leading the way. Corneiius told yesterday bv Albany bu vers for I me the other day that he raised 'wheat in Salem, also at Indep.-n- enough to k.epacowon every acre, dence. This is the price ot wheat I has St.fcK) tons of corn in h.s in the warehouses. Wheat held n-'-v. The .piahty of butter by farmers, delivered bv farmers I " '"-' h Poluced is excellent free on board, includm' sacks.!' have a mil ot butter wrh nie, would bring U41.. cnits Very S I little wlieat is being sold, it is likely that the reprted higher pi ice in Salem was lor w heat out side of the warehouses, which either here or in Salem would make a difference of 4 cents in the price. Vrtef Stricken. The death angel spread his somber wings ovei one ol the hap piest of Albany's families yester day, and left it desolate and grief Strieker. Little Natalie, beauti iul and cherished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Stuart, was the one tuen, and in the selection the old axiom that "The king of shadows loves a shining mark," received another illustration. Beautiful and beloved, bright beyond her years, a favorite with her play mates, active and intelligent, the years of ber earthly life though ended so quickly have been lruit ful in creating a memory of her that will be bright and lating with all who knew the sweet child. The sympathy of all will g out to the grief stricken family. Last Evenlng'e Entertaiuuivnt. Mr. Phillips' Chariot of "iig, at the opera house last evening was enjoyed by an appreciative audi ence. The views were well selected, accurate and take the audience through the lands traversed with all the accuracy of a real trip, ami without the expense and annoy ance attending foreign travel. The music is good and adds pleasure to the occasion. To-ii'ght tceucs in European c inntrieswill he shown, and an eut re new programme given. The treat is a rare one ami should not be misled by the peo ple of Albany. Chrletmae Maeqne Itall. The members oi the I'hill ar nionic Club, of this ciy, are mak ing great preparations for a masquerade ball to be given on Christmas night, l'arsou & Bray, of 1'ortland, will furnish the music and everything connected w ith the ball will be ot a high order. It will be a strictly invitation affair, and an active investigating com mittee will prevent tlieadmiMance of any masquers of questionable cbarat-Urs. DAIEIISO IN THE WILLAMETTE. P.ipsr Read by C H. Fchmidt at Farmers U:ti:t3 at Hir.-iabanr. tbe It is null-worthy that darimn,; in the Willamette Valley is a new industry, an industry full of ureal promises, and destined t j he one of the great pillars for future development of this favoie 1 stale. Progress and development in every il'iection, development of mind and of body is our watchword and we come liere together to learn from one another. The modern dairy industry has recently traveled across the llocky moun tain, and young trees uavj been planted here and there, nearly a:l over the I'aei lie coast, and a great number in California. Introduc tion ot the modern dairy industry is a mark in civilization, ana a great promoter of prosperity and welilare to any community. Ladies and gentleman yoj have not failed on your travel t- observe those ni 'e painted buildings ami comfortable homes very often hav ing a llock ot gentle cows near by them. Tlnrfc comfortable b unas where gentleness reign is what we wish t plant here in Oregon especi ally iu th'n beautiful W.llaiuette Valley and our hister vallevs we :ullv rcoriMiize the haul ta.-k our pioiue'S if this state have had; we praise tho e brave y ray-headed the men who are vet with us who had courage and pluck to overcome s. many and great difficulties when this .-tats first became settled, But in no way can we younger meu show our apprecia tion than by carrying forward the work of progress which our fathers and mothers have commenced. I'regress must go on and on. There is a law in nature which ays that there cm not come something f nothing, and this law finds lull applica ion in Agri culture. Our lields formerly so fertile are sUp by step failing, we are shipping the v-r lione and sinews of our splendid fields to Liverpool, and fora p oreompensa t ion. If gining to see that it is only a "I'.ieetion of time when we must discontinue the pre.-tnt system of farming. The oairy intereft will soon have a large claim in the Willamette Valle because this vall-y un questionably is better suited to sk'lliiil tlairy m tr an almost any J spot of ciiunl size iu the I'nited 1 states. A family can make a couifoi table living on a " acre, will appointed, dairy faun most anywhere in the Willamette Valley, and pay off a bigger mortice tlian I he man rais ing w I e .t. 11-00 acres, I lit of course tie must know h;s business. 'Ibis is what -ve want to call your a'tention to, enterprising joiuig men. We are all waiting on you, we are anxious to see this valley lull of beautiful home?, full of educated n-ple, full of pros perity and charity. Fitly acres of g'jod land will easily keep 2" &o.d "cows, each cow producing -U0 lbs of butter per year, you can raise a'l jour feed and more to. l ook at this bundle cf ccrnstalks, wonder ful are they not, I.J feet in length : just think for one moment tdey come from a 100 acre field h( re in the Willamette Valiey. Imagine a hundred acres in c rn w ith an avergc of over fifteen tons to (he a re. All these can be seen on Col. T. l. Corneiius farm at HillsLoro, Washing'on county, this ; state. Col. Cornelius, is a stur.ly friend and pmiuo'er of the dairy interest in this valley, he is en titled to cur warurest tt.anks for wnicii we are now uenuing aroiinu I I....I.. I.. if id tna.lu by Mr. Warren Cranston who lives between Salem and SiUertmi. This quality of butter brings 7" cents per roll and is a tailed at K0 and S'i cents. We are here con sideling natters of the greatest int-ne-it ; think of it for a moment, we bring to this coast from the Kastern states butter for many thousands of dollars weekly; should we iut produce it right here and have idl this n oney distrib. t d a in jng farmers in this state? 'lliis question is also worth considering our tow ns. Is it not the prosper. ty of the country of the fanners whicli builds up th towns and cities? Can we do it by the sys'em we now follow? "All enterprising men know we cannot. We can not do it by grain growing a'one. Mir aim must he, as S'Kjii as possi ble, to have a popu'at.on of one million good cit zens in the Wil lamette Valley instead of 150, 0U0. Look at our waste land, look at our summer fallow, it could as w ell raise a crop of corn and w ould be in better condition for grain after wards. Every farmer who has 25 acres can see as much grain as be does now ami besides keep 50 cows and raise ait tht feed for the maud get twice the income begets now. The dairy industry lias been looked upon as reputing more work than for instance wheat growing. Tiiis is true of the old system. But not of the modern ay of going at dairying; we have new machinery w hieh is the same in the d tiry as the self binder is i i the grain Held. We have our silo whicti s o e the green corn as easily and safely as our watehoiises does w heat. It is safe to say that th-? un idem dairy industry rt quires less rough labor than any other kind ot farming an I is a sure way to prosperity and welfare, while grain fanning as practiced is the sure way to poverty and destruc tion of on i noil. State Superintendent Mi Kirov has se'eeted Kugene as the point for the next teachers' institute of the second judical district, to be held Pecember :."., 30 and l. The The district comprises the coun ties of Benton, Coo. Cunv. I long- j las and Lane. The case of the state vs. Fred Zorn, ihe L'matilia county farmer who recently attempted the whole sale slaughter on Inuiself, wife and mother-in-law, has been conlinu- d for the teini, probably on ae-ount of the precarious condition of Mrs. Zorn. Neal Ho.ier and William Wal lace, the youttis alio stole the cat'le from a man's pasture on Young's mountain and sold them to a Milton butcher, were ar raighc 1 iu the ciicuit court at l'eiidleton anil entered a plea of guilty. Young Wallace was com mitted to the state reform school f. r one year and D z er was fined :;tx. State Superintendent MeF.lroy has relurm d from Kastern Oregon, where he attended the Morrow county teachers' institute ami supervis d other features of edu cational work. He reports a fine attendance cf teachers and an active interest in school woik at the institute. The material inter ests of that part of the state are advancing. The wheat crop was good this year and far above the average, nd is bringing good prices. The farmers are greatly encourage.l and correspondingly happy. I'eppner, the county s?at, is rapidly improving, and now has one of the best hotels in the state. Naughty Kuji. The Harrisbnrg Courii r is res ponsible for the following account of some trouble iu the school there : One day at school last week, twu boys, one named Siaith and the other llardtsty, began practicing Ihe manly art of self-defense, when Smith, being over-:na'.ched, was accidentally hurt, and had to lay up a couple of days for repairs, l'eace would have reigned had it not been that one of Smith's brothers d-termined to "do up" Hardest. He hied into the pres ence of Hardest- with blood in his eye, but the way he was knocked out in a few sliott rounds would have brought forh . the heartiest applause of John L. It is this quarrel that caused Cto. Williams to display a revolve', whicli ac tion caused bim twenty dolkrs. As the boys are all piq ils of the school here the directors promptly took the matter in hand and will do all in their power to prevent the re-cccurrence of such disgrace ful scenes, and in this they should be assisted by every school patiou. An Jnfort imate Girl. Sin riff Nolan, of Lane county, was in this city yesterday en route to Salem. He Had in charge Maud Fitch, a young giil who was in-ane. The "unfortunate young woman bad la-en se Iu ed by a worthless fellow named Sawyer, which, it is said, can si I her in sanity. The latter was at the depot, having followed the t tlicer and the yirl from Kugt in-. When he was espied by the sheriff he was given five minutes to leave the city, whi- h he did. He ought to bo in the penitentiary. Cuming Thursday Evening. The mus'c loving public of Mrs eity c in rejoice. A rare treat is in store. "The Spanish Studi-nts" will appear on Thursday of this week. Kach of these rank as the highest artist. Their nui ic pjsi tively has no equal. They are the genuine "Spanish Students," no counterfeit on these. Ttie St. Paul (jlobe-lK-moL-rat speaking of them when they appeared in that city said "the music hall was not large enough to accommodate the immense audience " Don't for get, they will be here one night only. The Asylum Farm. Salem Statesman: The plaster fng inside the three s'mv farm bouse at the asylum farm has been finished, and it will be ready for occupancy in a few weeks. The work on the immense cow barn and ttie horse barn is also well along towards completion, and it will not be many weeks before l-.d. F. Hutchins, the contrnctor, will be able to turn the three buil lings over to the state of Oregon. They make the state's big farm 1 )om up, as they art) tine buildings and well put up. From the Sautlain Mines. J. V. Pipe and C. K. Browne! returned yesterday from the San tiam mines. The new qnarz milt of the Albany Miuiig and Millitg Co., will Le ready to In gin work in about 10 days. The work at the mines is progres ing favorably, ami will be prosecuted all winter.
