Miss Cora Arledge, a young girl 14 years of age. with her father, arrived in town last night from the forests of the West and from the Big Horn basin. Miss Arledge met with a most serious and re- ma' kable accident at her home recently. Her fa' her is a ramb tnaninthe Big Horn basin, and one day last week a jcowboy rode tip to h 8 ranch on a young horse that he was breaking. In a spiri' of jeet he dared Miss Cora to rid-t the horse, when, without a thought, she vaulted into the saddle, throwing her leg around the horn, and the hoiee in to buck ing and pitching at a furicus rate, but she stuck to him, quieting him every jump. Then the horse be pan to run and ran for two straight hours over the prairie, with Mi.-s Arledge hanging to I he reins and three cowboys in hot pursuit. One of (hem at last succeeded in lassoing the frightened animal ar.d gradually brought it to aMandstill. Miss At ledge was told to get off, but she answered that she could not, and just then the horse made another plunge, broke the lasso and started again on its wild career. It ran for over twenty miles and then dropped dead, a-ul its daring rider was found. un conscious by its side. At fir.-t it was thought that her h g was broken, as she did not appear to have the uee of it, but upon an investigation it was found that no bones were btoken, but the muscles of the light leg. from the long severe strain in holding on to the horn cf the saddle, had lest their power, and her leg hangs limp and useless She was sent to Omaha for treatment. Casper C Wyo.; Special to Denver News. Important Timber Cane. A motion was agr-ed to in the CniUd States supreme court Tuesday, in which thousands of men, who heve taken up the heavily timbered land of Oregon, Washington and California, under the act of Juue 7, 187S, as timber land, are interested. The I'nited States courts on the Pacific coast have un formly decided that lands "chiefly valuable for timber, but unlit for cultivation," were limber lards within the meaning of the act, but the interior department lias held that if they were valu able for timber, but capable of be ing ma le agricultural land at any coat, then they were agricultural lands. The result is that under such a construction, it is contended there is little or no t inber land, unless it was to le found, the department of the inteiior decbred, "in the rugge.l, barren and mountainous regions." In the case of the I'nittd Stites vs. Budd & Montg m-ry. there was a suit brought to cancel a patent on that ground. I'nited Slates District Judge II an ford decided that it was timber land or else there was no ti nbt-r land in Washington. Now the I'nited States, through the at torney general, appeals the case and asks that it be advanced. The supreme court decided to advance the case, inasmuch as there are thousands of cases depending on this decision There will be a hearing January 11 next. . A Large Cougar. The Bultan has ordered the strength ening of the military forces in Tri poli, 'he only imporUi.t Afr'cui province stili acknowledging the actual sovereignty of the porte. The Tripolitans have been consid erably shaken in their allegiance by the rejiorts of the pro.-perity of Tunis under French, ana Egypt under English rule, and the symptoms of discontent have of late become alaim ng to the tyran nical pasha. This otlicer has en deavored to put down discor.teLt by the infliction of ba-barous pun ishments, and it ii no uncommon sight in the capital to see half a lozen poor w retches impale I in tin market-place. Dictator Fonaeca Trying- to Subline Revolution. London, Nov. 12 T. -dav's ad vices Irjm Kiu tirntide lo r-ui Hive the reasons lor the secess'on of that province. One is that. owing to the distance ol l lie province from Rio Janeiro, i's in terests do not attract the a'.tent on thev deserve. Another is that the state prefers to govern itself, and does not sgr.-e w ith the general policy- of guiding affairs at thel north. HaF nscca is, all rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, ' in apparently good health, and ( able to make a vigorous campaign, It is reported in Montevideo that Da Fonseca has declared his pos iiive resolution to put down the rebellion in the south, and toenmlciy, if need be, every abb bodied mar within reach of bis authority. The dictator has abol ishe I exemption from military service, which heretofore could be purchased in Brazil. Hereafter rich and poor will have to take their turns in the army, which is being rapidly increased. The ii-uiy is more efficient than it was under the empire, and the navy has also been strengthened. There is every prospect, therefore, of a protracted struggle, should Rio Grande Do Sul persist in its deter liiina ion to secede. A private telegram received is to the effect that Rio Grande Do Sul is now entirely in the hands of the feceders from the dictator ship of Da Fonseca. The dispatch also says the military have given support to the seceders. IXUKTEII FOR BRIBERY, That la What the 8. F. Grand Jury Say.
