A programme for a great Meet to defend Russian interests and to act aggressively on the high sea? ha9 been mapped out, and in a comparatively short time we may expect to see the Russian tlag floating over vessels as big as any in the Knglisb, French or Italian navies. Tub wonders of nature will never cease to be objects of study and investigation. The New York Independent has been delving and says that why trees or other plants grow erect, has never yet been definitely determined. It has been supposed to have some rela tion to the action of light. Cer tainly a plant usually growing erect turns toward any opening lor light in a dark cellar; but when there is no light, they grow erect. Dr. Maxwell S. Masters has re cently called attention to somej cases in an English coal mine;! 1,000 feet deep. Some props nude from green posts pushed out into growth; and, though in absolute darkness, they were perfectly erect, and perfectly blanched. Tue women of the world are as serting their capacity to till the various vocation with persistent energy. The latest example comes from Servia in Europe, wbeie a woman named Mila is on triti' for brigandage. The account eays that she bad been for a number of years a terror to the people of that region, an J her crimes and cruel ties far exceed those of the ordi nary btigands in Turkey or Serv ia. Mila is accused of fourteen mur ders and numerous robberies, and the peculiarly unfeminine feature of her deeda of blood was that she horribly mutilated her victims. In audacity and cruelty she had few equals among outlaws. She is not good looking, and has a nose like a hawk. The peculiarities of religious be lief continue to hold sway. A Mrs. Woodworth, some years ago, made quite a stir in California over the sect known as the Church of God, one of the tenets of w hich is to wash the dieciples feet. She has recently been operating in Kansas, and at one place secured 50) proselytes to her organization. The foot bath ceremony was en tered upon and carried oat in detail, water being used from a well near by.
