The Florence public school starts up on Monday Nov. 2nd, with T. M. Martin a principal. The schools interests are rapidly developing here. The ex union soldiers, in and about Florence, are talking of starting a Post of Grand Army at Horenee, they could probably get from thirtv to fort members, at present. The run of salmon this fall has been very disappointing, to fisher men and cannery men. mere have not been more than one sixth as large a run as heretofore. The force of Chinamen at the can nery are idle a good portion of the time. Preparation for the jetty work goes right along. A pile-driver and stone scows are oemg prepareo. Mr. Lyle the superintendent, seems to be very efficient in the govern ment work. While he is unas suming in manner he drives things right along as tnougn ne wen working tor bimseit. Tim weathnr has been deliehtfu for the last three weeks, no Lette time could have been selected for those seeking pleasure "down by the sea." But while the weather has been so tine the "harbor bar lias been moanin." Indeed it is hard to see why there should be suc'i rough breakers on ihe beach and no apparent cause. Florence is now a rapidly grow ing town. Many houses have been built during the past summer. Great avenues are cut through the f re3ts back of town, which shows that somebody hai financial faitii in the future of the town. It is 110 very uncommon thing to see our river steamers loaded with immi grants and their covered wagons, coming to find homes in the Siuslaw country. The Ocean Steamer that brings us our supplies, and takes our froduce away is happily "The Chance." Its a chance when she comes in, varying in intervals of from two weeks 10 two months. The people of the Siuslaw are thoroughly sick of these chance steamers, ami will soon build one to be owned by .he merchtnts and farmers cf Lane count v. The uro- ject of building such a boat is tak ing on shape and will soon materialize. Our new light house, on Heceta pronounced He see tab Head, is to be 17 miles north of Florence, and the situation one of the most lovely on the I'aci fic Coa t. A fi tie road is being made from Florence to that point and when done will form cni cf ihe mos' roman ic drives imaginable. Sometimes the way will le along the level reach, and then it will rir-e by gentle ascent to an elevation ol 50 J feet or more overlooking the great Pa cific Ocean. Hundreds and hun dreds of sea lions are to be eeen, enjoying themselves on the locks by the eea or disporting themselves among the toaming breakers. A Washing ton special says: "The feeling in favor of international bimetallism seems to be growing and to be liiely to prevail in Eurcean cabi nets if the leading Enrpean powers can be convinced that the United .states does not intend to plunge into tree coinage in its notions. Several gentlemen of standing piivately agreed early in the sum mer to make some inquiries cf foreign financiers with a v ew to an international agreement, and to report the result to the president ami secretary of the treasury with out expense to the government. They have discoveied so frieualy a feeling to the use of silver in Kmope, that they recently asked ana obtained credentials irom our government, showing who they are and what their instructions are, without having authoiity to commit tne united States othcially to any 1 rogramme. Horace Porter's article on Militia Service is worthy the attention of every one interested in the National Guard. Very curiously, but little attention has ever been given in the magazines to the frightful tragedies of the Roman Am phi theatre, which were carried oh through centuries, and in which the lives of hundreds of thousands were sac rified. C. Osburn Ward, whose book "The Aucient Lowly" last year excited much attention, and who has made this subject his life work, gives an article in the Novemlier Cosmopolitan on the "Massacres of the Roman Amphitheatre," an i the article is illustrated by drawings by Dan Beard, and from famous paintings, covering pages ol history which will hold the reader s closest at tention.
