at ISD.'s Third street, between
Yamhill and Taylor, by taking a
dose of strychnine.

the lodging house in which Mrs.
Paige lived, Fays that she has been
.a lodger in the house for about
four or five weeks, and was always
quiet and reserved, the aud her

had been living a fast life. She
had written two.notes, one to her
husband, vv. t. t'aige, w ho is a
clerk in Kohn's clothing house,
and the other to a Catholic priest,
to whom she was accustomed to go
for advice and counsel. In these
notes she announced her intention
of committing suicide, and beforw
the parties to whom they were
sent were able to come to her she
had committed the i:i'h act.
After she came in, before noon,
she undressed herself, and, putting
on her nightgown, w lit to bed,
and took the poison that ended
her life.

Hypodermic injections were ad
ministered to induce vomiting,

The Florence public school
starts up on Monday Nov. 2nd,

The schools interests are rapidly
developing here.
The ex union soldiers, in and
about Florence, are talking of
starting a Post of Grand Army at
Horenee, they could probably get
from thirtv to fort members, at
present.
The run of salmon this fall has
been very disappointing, to fisher
men and cannery men. mere
have not been more than one
sixth as large a run as heretofore.
The force of Chinamen at the can
nery are idle a good portion of the
time.
Preparation for the jetty work
goes right along. A pile-driver and
stone scows are oemg prepareo.
Mr. Lyle the superintendent, seems
to be very efficient in the govern
ment work. While he is unas
suming in manner he drives things
right along as tnougn ne wen

Tim weathnr has been deliehtfu
for the last three weeks, no Lette
time could have been selected for
those seeking pleasure "down by
the sea." But while the weather
has been so tine the "harbor bar
lias been moanin." Indeed it is
hard to see why there should be
suc'i rough breakers on ihe beach
and no apparent cause.
Florence is now a rapidly grow
ing town. Many houses have been
built during the past summer.
Great avenues are cut through the
f re3ts back of town, which shows
that somebody hai financial faitii
in the future of the town. It is 110
very uncommon thing to see our
river steamers loaded with immi
grants and their covered wagons,
coming to find homes in the
Siuslaw country.
The Ocean Steamer that brings
us our supplies, and takes our
froduce away is happily "The
Chance." Its a chance when she
comes in, varying in intervals of
from two weeks 10 two months.
The people of the Siuslaw are
thoroughly sick of these chance
steamers, ami will soon build one
to be owned by .he merchtnts and
farmers cf Lane count v. The uro-
ject of building such a boat is tak
ing on shape and will soon
materialize.
Our new light house, on Heceta

is to be 17 miles north of Florence,
and the situation one of the most

to that point and when done

London, Ovt. 20. The British
steamer Boston, from Cardiff for
London, arrived at Falmouth after
having been in a collision early
this morning with the British bark
t hailwood, from Antwerp for
Valparaiso. The Charlwoott
foundered almis: immediately
after the collision, with a loss of
n neteen lives. Three men were
killed on board the Boston at the
time of collision and tha steamers'
bows wee badly stove in. The
captain of the Charlwood, his wife
and ton and a governess and stew
ardess, together w ith all the bark's

drowned, in spite of desperate
efforts made by the lifeboa's cf
vessels which happened to be near
the sc.-ne of the collision to rescue

Encroachments of the Mississippi.

Robbed and Murdered.
Fort Worn, Tex., Oct. 26.
Martin Mooney, a Fort Worth &
Rio Grande employe, was found
hanging to a limb 1 f a tree in the
outskirts of the city this 111 -ruing.
Mooney had just been paid $18.
The suppisition is that he was
drugged and robbed, died from the
effects of the drug, and was placed
where found to convey the im
press on that it was a case of
suicide.
A Beautiful Girl's Suicide).
St. Makv'h. W. Va., Oct 26.
aisy Lee. a beautiful 17-year-old
girl, committed suicide here today.
She bad been reproved by her
father on account of a young man
w ho was paying her attention, and -her
brother also upbraided ber.
She sent to a drmr store, secured a.
dose of poison and was found half
hour later in her death agony.
