A new town is springing up at the terminus of the Suinpter Val ley nil road called McKwen. It w ill soon become a rival of Baker City for the trade of Grant county and the mines of that section. A locomotive of theO. and '.V. T. H. li.waa recently attached for hntk wages by a former employe of I hat road, while the locomotive was hauling a train at Pendleton. C. B. Wright came forward and claimed all of the rolling stock as his personal property and secured it9 release. The sheriff made the attachment by chaining the loco motive to the track. A iva I'olnt of L.aw. W. J. Turnidge was the defend ant the other day in a case before Justice Humphrey, w hich brought up a nice point ot law. Mr. Tutn idge was arrested on a charge of obtaining monuy under false pre tenses, preferred by his neighoor, George Bradley. The la'ter, it seems, owned a county warrant in the hatuls of the cletk. Having I'CcaMon to leave the county he instructed his mother to draw the warrant. Mrs. Bradley ask;d Mr. I'urnidge to attend to the business for her one day as he was going to town, which he did. He drew the money an 1 paid it over to her, ex cept a few dollars which the owed him. For deducting the amount of the debt, he was arrested as s'.ated. Justice Humphrey very properly held that he had com mitted no crime and discharged Wui. A lirave of Tlitlyi'K. On the arrival of the south bound overland train Sunday night two young men took the 'bus to the "U. Charles h-jtel. They bad a valise and behaved properly enough un til officer Lee happened to board the 'bu-' just before reaching the hotel. i'hey at once became ner vous, and as soon as the vehicle stopped they took their valise and started away at a bri.-k run. Hie Lower Smla Shooting. Mr. Wm. McKinnon, w ho was arrested on a ch-irge of shooting Mr. Atkinson in the leg recently, is i n the city. Mr. McKinnon's story puts cutirt ly a d.tferent light on the all'air. lie says that Atkin son was angiy at his boy. called him a bar and a tempted to strike him with a whip. This naturally arouse! the father's ire and an altercation ensued. He says that Atkinson, while seated in his ouggy, drew a revolver from his pocket, and in to doing shot him self in the ankle. Mr. McKinnon is well known in Albany, and haB many warm friends here. Ketiimeil from the KuBt. Mt. A. K. Chapman, the nopular agent of the Oregon Pacific Co. at this city, has leturned from a trip through the East. He altended the annual meeting of the Nation al Ticket Association at St. Pan', anil accompanied by his wi e made a trip through the fatuous Yellow stone I'ark. I'hey then visited New York and several of the Eastern States, and returned through New Mexico via the Southern rout . They had a most enjoable trip, which occupied about two months. mtiiiaiy i n. SWEET HOME Xestling down among the hills, surrounded by a fringe of majes tic firs, twenty-seven miles east of Albany, on the Willamette Wiley and Cascade Mountain Wagon Koad, lies the beautiful illage of Sweet Home. Its environments are suggestive of the nam , "Sweet Home." The present town is located on the banks of Ames Creek, mid was founded in 1S7! by James Simonds erec ing the store building now occupied by Hamil ton it Andrews. It has since steadily gained in jHipulatioti and importance, until to dav it con tains two hundred ami fifty inhabi tants, one general merchandise storj, oi.e ding store, three black smith shops, one wagn shop, two feed stable, two bote s one butcher shop, cue tannery, one chinch, one barber shop and saloon. The post office has lately been moved into a nice commodious building and the interior arrange iiii nts speak well for the post master Mr. O.T. Lubker. Several new dwelings are being construct ed lliis fall. The surrounding country is mainly hi Iv, although there is several line bodies of pra:rie land, all of which are susceptible of a high state of cultivation. The hill lands are used mainly for meadow and pastuiage, yet when grain is sow n on them they pro duce even more than prairie lands A large ipiuntitv of road land re mains unsettled on, that might be made into beautiful homes with out any extmrJinary outlay of labor. This is an excellent fruit country for fruits of all kinds, fspicially grapes, Mrs. W. S. Wils n of Wiley Creek having some this fall that rival tli9 Cali fornia product. StiMljr C, Joking apart, it does look as if a little elementry instruction is needed in the shape of an object lesson regarding the Australian system of voting recently adopted by the state legislature, and to be put in practice for the first time in this state at the June 'V- election.So many blunders are being made by the voters of other commonwealths that even though we of Oregon are exceptionally intelligent, some of us may make a mes of our inten tions next June and vote against the verv man or men for whom e desire to cast our distinguished siilbages. Astorian. The new law does net apply to municipal elections, unless especi ally provided by an amendment to the city chatter, which is not the case in Albany. In the state and county elections, the ticket will have to be printed with the names of all the candidates on one ticket, and the voter will have to desig nate by a mark of his own which candidate is to receive his y,ate No one (Killing place is to receive the ballots of more than 240 voters and at each polling place there must be at least three booths for the accointno lation of voters when they prs-pare their ballots. The county will have to furnish booths for each precinct before the June election. ISack to Ton n.
