Man should have stamina enough to shape hit acts in accordance to justice and right, without con 'eidering selfish ends, but veiy ftw do that. However if the present and luture surroundings and out comes are taken into considera tion, there will be but one course of action pursued, even if eellish ends only are kept in view, and ttiat course, will be guided by the ' trite practice of doing right. The Thilidelphia LeJger says that except in tempests of passion, or storms of intense and uncon trolled desire, every one thinks at least a little about the conse quences of his actions. He knows that food and drink will still the pangs of hunger and thirst thus he eats and di inks; that the act of walking will bring him where he wishes to be thus he walks; that a certain vigilance will guard him from injury thus he exerts it. He observes the result of his actions toward other people, and orders them accordingly. So ac customed are we to this simple foresight that it becomes an al most unconscious process, passing swiftly through the mind, and regulating the conduct as rapidly. Were this not so the merest im pulse or whim would be the ever ruling motive, and a sad medley of purposeless actions would testify to our imbecility. This foresight, however, has chiefly to do with immediate reeults, and troubles itself little in general with remote consequences. We desire to possess something and btraitway employ the most direct means to obtain i'. We see trouble or dis tress, and hasten to relieve it. We wish to please a frend, covie grant him the favor he asks ; or we have received an injury and express strongly and hastily our displeasure. The first and natural impulse is so to act as to produce quickly the results we desire and a very large proportion of human conduct flows from this source. As fast, however, ia intelligence progresses, this foresight of im mediate results grows into that of more and more i emote conse quences; and thus life is modified for the better. People learn to think further ahead, and to correct or to banish many a proposal that impulse has suggested. The thoughtless man eats to please the palate; the wise man looks beyond that sensation to the more remote eilect of food upon his health and strength. One man sees in an act of meanness and frati 1 a means of immediate gain ; another beholds in such an act the more remote of the loss of confidence and respect; another, witn a still clearer vision, sees a future stained by dishonor and wrecked by loss of character. Indeed, there is hardly any subject on which ad vancing intelligence, by consider ing the remote consequence:, will not largely alter the methods and modi'y the actions. The novice in the game of chess sees only the in stant result of his hasty move, but as he gains insight into the yame he tinds another and yet another consequence involved, and he learns to sacrifice many a sup oosed advantage for the sake of ulterior issues. So in life, the in telligent man, to the extent of his ability, looks beyond the immedi ate effect he desires to produce, to the more aud more remote results that are likely to follow, and studies them calmly and dis passionately. The monthly statements of ex port and imports add to the con fusion of the free traders as they show that our foreign trade is rapidly increasing. For the twelve months ending Aii8Ut.'!l8t, our imports and exports aggre gated $1,71S,oj7,C7!, an increase of HWjSW.itt as compared with I8S3. Our exports for the first named period were $909,2tU,J33 as against ifG!3,lU 1,740 in 1885 and our imports S3'J,0'J3,1M1, or $1S9. 186.501 more than in 1885. Thus one free trade assumption is dis posed of, while the internal commerce of the country con tinues to grow at a rate beside which the expansion of our foreign trade. whose , rapid growth exceeds that jf any other nation, seems like stagnation. Exoi and is waking up to the fact that the Suez caual will be practically useless to her in case of war with other European nations, and therefore the holding of Egypt has been a usiless outlay of blood, money and power. England is very likely to learn other lessons equally as hard to endure. One of them is that the annexation spit it in Canada, is likely to culnrnate in the loss of the land route to India, via the Canadian Pacific railroad. Iris said that the first ailanthus trees were brought from the far east, and planted in Xew York City, where the belles and beaux of 7-3 years ago used to admire them very much. They must have had a queer conception of the beauties of odors in those days. Our modern belles and beaux would feel under a deep sense of relief if those ancient fellows had forgotten to bring over the fragrant ailanthus. They are making a g'ant micro scope in Munich, which can be induced to magnify to 10,000 diameters. Possibly it would be advisable to bring it over to the world's fair to tind the Oregon ex hibit tb ere. Sate Care for the Liquor or Opium Habits.
