Tba FlctarHMiia Drama. At the Albany opera house Fri day evening next, Oct. !th, the well known fuvoricta Joseph R. Grismerand Phu-bc Davis, assist ed by iheir own company will be the attraction and appear in the romantie military drama "Beacon J.ights," of which the San Fran cisco Examiner says : Las season there was brought out a new plav at the Grand, entitled "Beacoii Lights." The play is rememlieied as treating of a theme bimili ir to the "Golden Giant." A young woman, whose husband has died in the gold fields, endures tribu lations in seaking to establish lu-r c'aim. She is protected, and vili ainy thwarted by thechiva'rous conduct of a youiig army officer and his friend, an honest miner. "Beacon Lights" alwavs was and always will I; a great play ; the piece, however, has been greatly improved since its last visit to this city, as the comedy has been de veloped,, and the action lrghVned by putting into five instead of four acts, and so avoiding the shifting of scenes in one of the lest acts if the play. Each scene now stands an act, and each has a strong dramatic climax." "Beacon Lights' should never Ikcoihc "played out." Reserved seats on sale at Will & Link's music store. The city council met in special session last evening, mayor and all members of the council being pres ent. The report of Chief Engineer C. II. Stewart in egard to fire cis terns and water wa9 read. Follow ing is the report : To the Honorable Common Coun cil of the City of Albany. Gentlemen: In measuring the lire cisterns to day with Council man frencn we lo.inu tnai tne witir stands in them as follows : First and Ellsworth, Revere House. 10 feet 6 inches ; First and Feiry, Odd Fellow's Temple, Oft 2 in. ; Second and Broadalbin, Democrat" office, 10 ft.; First and Washington, St. Charles hotel 0 ft; Fourth and Washington, Hearst's res , 4 ft 3 in., Fourth and Ellsworth, Pearce's Church, 4 ft 8 in.; Fourth and Montgomery, Crosby's res , 3 ft 7 in. ; Second and Baker, Mrs. Saltinarsh's res., 4 ft. The first tl ree are connected with the canal system, and the ti-Ht two are practically inexhaust ible. The third, at the Democrat office, is connected with the small Hume on that street, and although it is now the deepest of all, it is not always so. The remaining five are at present almost worth ies, the depth of water running from 3.i feet to C feet. These cisterns 'are all located at import ant points, and in my opinion it is absolutely necessary that some thing should be done immediately to make them available in case of a fire. All of them, except the one on Fourth and Montgomery, can be connected with a branch of the canal by tiling a distance of only one block in each case, and I would recommend this as the cheapest and the best plan and that it be lone immediately Also 1 would call your attention to the fact tbat the new sewer on Kerry ttreei will run within about six feet of the fire cistern at the Odd Fellows' Temple and as it will bo something like four or live feet deeper, the probability is that the cistern will be entirely drained would recommend tbat the council empower the proper persons to nave it repaired ana cemented im mediately in case tbat it is drain ed as we have reasons to believe it will be. It is one oi our most im portant cisterns, as you all know and it would not be well for it to be out of repair longer than necestary. C. H. Stkwakt, Chief Eng'neer, A. F. D. The report was referred to the committee on lire and water, with authoiity to make ceitain needed improvements. Councilman Burkhart reported that a letter had been received from the purchaser of the city boiuis stating that the lithograph is nearly completed, The marshal reported that the building at the foot of Lyon strtet was being removed llayue & Buck were awarded the contiact for building the lat teral sewer across Calapooia street between f.igfith and Aiatb ihe matter of the connection with sewers was brought up and on motion it was ordered to declare all such unconnected places nui sances and order them abated.
