Although the condition and . r l .i (pianmy oi grain aim ouirr pro ducts in the country's crop of ISA are much better than was ex pet ted, Oregon even stand ahead of the general average in corn, wheat, rye, oats, barley, totatoe, apples and and grapes. 11ns from the advance sheets ot the September report of the depart ment of sericulture, which has just reached here, and is authorita tive. TUB COSD1TION AND QUANTITY. At the time of harvesting the condition of Oregon wheat is given at 97. California is 03, Washing ton 13, and we are eight points above Kansas, which is given at M. Texas is i)3, and Illinois is 100. The genetal average for the entire country is !Hi.9, ar thai Ore gon let er off than than the aver age condition of the country. The report suys cf wheat that the condition is high, consider ing both spring and winter varie ties, in soils, latitudes and eleva tion so widely differing. The gen eral average has only been xceeded twice since 387V in ISSii and 188-1. State averages are quite unifoim, but ten falling below 1)5, and three below 00, the lowest be ing bS for South Carolina, and 84 for North Carolina. THE LEADING WAEAT STATES. The figures for the principal wheat growing elates are as follows : Ohio, D8 ; Michigan, '.18 ; Indiana, 100; Illinois, 100; Wis consin, 1)0; Minnesota, 100; Iowa 59; Missouri, 94; Kansas 89; Ne braska, 98; North Dakota, 94; south Dakota, 99; California 98; Oregon 97; and Washington 93 East of the Alleghanies: New York, 99; Pennsylvania, 99; Mary land, 97 ; and Virginia, 95. In the southwest of Texas, 97. STRING WHEAT INJl'KED. The reiiort says that the spring heat of the Pacific coast, has tx-eu somewhat injured by "hot and blighting weather." This cannot apply to wheat in the Wil lamette valley, which has not been ilamagi.d at all, and wheie there is a much greater yield than last ytar. About 3i, P00 acres of comparatively level land may be covered by the com pany's canals, and the cost nf apply ing the water will be nominal, such a natural plan is offered lor a sys tein of irrigation. It is estimated that this entire basin may be filled with water to an average depth of twenty-two feet by a dam Ii tt v feet high. Natural routes for the ditches are also at hand.
