The car jumped tt e track at the coiner oi filth ana J streets in East Portland. It is not known whether the rccident was caused by a rock on the track, or by the breaking of tlie rear axle. The car was throw n violently over on its side and the windows com pletely shattered. There were thirteen passengers in the carat the time. It is just as effective as before the kiss, and just as pretty and all that, and it does not muss your hair so much. The proud and haughty laethod is very satisfactory if you choose the right man. You should let the "cold moon" shine full upon your face, and with your lips "curling scornfully," you pay : " Y"ou would not dare." and look him steadily and scornfully in the eye. You must be sure tJ choose a man who will not be scared to death at this ! and wish himself at home. The right sort of a man will grab you instantly. Then you can do the "contrast" act, which is very ef fective, turn meek and quiet, and "half timid," or do the tragedy queen business and leave the gen tle act lor later. Now all men don't go in for "taming" girls, and all men don't go in for catching the coquette, and all don't fancy teaching and encouraging shy girls. For two hours this morning the president was in consultation with represen tatives of the state and navy de partments. At present the United States naval lorce in Chili consists of one ves sel, the Baltimore. The San Francisco touched at Cailao, Peru, last week on her way northward. An effort was made by the navy department to communicate with her, but she sailed for Acapulco, .Mexico, on t nday before the cable' grain reached her. To unite all ihe Protestant churches in the I " n i ted States, except the Episco pal, under one form of worship, is i he object for which the Rev. Dr. Y. J. Canfleld, of St. Paul's Uni- verbalist church, is striving. His idea is to establish an ''American church," which, while allowing the latitude asked in the matter of creed, shall confirm to one lit iirgv. Dr. Canlield does not think the different denominations can ever be united on matters of be iief, but he believes they can be brought into closer relations in their emotional religion. With :bis idea in view, he has proposed i litutgt' which he expects to use in his own church in Chicago. "I have the Episcopal prayer-book for my model," said Dr. Canfield to day. Several 1'eople Burned to Death on the Dakota rralrlea, Willi amsi'ort, N. D., Sept. 28. Oeorge W. Johnson and bis son, it ho lived near Beaver creek, were burned to death in a prairie fire. Mr. Taboria, living near here, will probably die from the effects of burns. No further news can be learned from the Holland settle ment, 35 miles south of here. She wants to know why men's trousers should not be cut off at the ankles, she wants to know if there is comfort in a shiny shirt iront or a still collar the growing prevalence of flannel, silk, cheviot and unetarch- ed linen answers nay; she asks why men should stuff a yard or two of superfluous cotton cloth into their trousers instead of wearing shirt waists as the little shavers do ; she shoots the bat of man, so losieak, with a condem nation of its stiffness. Sensible men will welcome the thought of an effort to reform their dress in the direction of comfort. and con venience. But our hopes are damped somewhat by the fact that, throughout the ages when women were the architects of men's shirts, there was never known a shirt that fitted. Still Driving Ont the Jaws. The party from Podolaski are now on their way to America. Fastest Uallroad Trip on Kecord. New York, Sept. 23. At 10:56 this morning the private coach "Urassmere," containing John W. Mackay and party, arrived, hav ing made the fastest trip on record from San Francisco to this city. The party left San Francisco at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening last. It is rumored Mackay's trip to this city is for the purpose of looking after the interest ot the Pacific roads in connection with the Searles will contest. (J rat ton Dal ton made his escape from the county jail last night. He was to be sentenced Monday, next, on conviction of the Alila train rob bery. John Beck, awaiting trial for horse stealing, and W. B. Smith, for burglarizing a car at Tulare, are also gone. The deliv ery was made by opening an iron window in the basement with a key, and then opening a kitchen door with a different key, and the cell door with another. As the men passed out the doors were agaii lociced, and nothing was known of their escape until this morning. Oeorge JUcKinley, liv ing five miles south of town, came in last night to attend church, and hitched his horses in the court house plaza. The horses and buggy were gone at 8 o'clock last night, and it is supposed to have been taken by the escapes. Sheriff Kay and deputies are in pursjit. Ihe men had assistance either from the outside or inside. There was a guard at the jail looking for an attack from another quarter. William Dalton is still confined in jail, and is safely guarded. Earamie, Wy., Sept. 28. The Laramie county prison was in the charge of Deputy Sheriff Kelly at 10 o'clock Sunday morning. At that hour he was summoned to the prison door. Is he opened the door a revolver waj presented to his forehead. At the command of a roughly dressed man in a slouch hat, the deputy sheriff "threw up hands." The stran&er then bound and gagged him, and took away his key and liberated Charles Mil ler, a 17-year-old murderer, under sentence of death, and Frank Parkinson, a soldier, recently 'sen tenced to twelve years imprison ment, for murder. After an hour's hard work Kelly managed to re lease himself, and sound an alarm and at least 500 mounted men are . now scouring the country for the fugitives within a radius of fifty ' miles of Cheyenne.' The man who held up the jailer is said to be a vagrant known as "Curley," who was recently released from the jail. Miller murdered Ross T. Fishbaugh and Charles W. Emerson, in a box car, near Pine Bluffs, a year ago. Emerson and Fishbaugh were respectable young mea traveling as tramps for a laik. A Race War in Chicago. Chicago, Sept. 2S. At noDn to day two gangs of dock laborers, one white and one colored, got into an altercation on the Western Transit Company's docks, while waiting to r e paid off. J as. Kelly, white, was stabbed to the heart and kiMed by Jasper Bales, colored. Bales was pursued by the other white combatants, who also filed a number of shots after him, wounding him in the arm.
