Tlie practice, tliat has become bo prevalent in many portions of our .country, forestalling the pun ishment by law of crime, by the proJjss called lvneh law, is one that is reprehensible in the ex treme and should be eo looked uj on by the public. In nine cases out of ten harm instead of good comes from the lynch law pro ceeding?. The Flor.id. Times Union, in coin mental"; upon this subject elucidates facts and con clusions that are north consider ing. It eays : The increasing frequency of murder by lynching is one of the most frightful evils of the present time. There is no greater reproach to our modern civilization. In the asjes when superior strength recog nized no law, human lifo was taken without form of law by feudal Ioids who were a law unto themselves. We read of those dark ages with horro:, and yet we live in an ag j w here tho taking of human life without form of law is still more generally sanctioned by the people, at least in our country, which1 boasts of being the most advanced in civilization. Hun dreds of lynching occcr eac'i year. It Las become an accepted idea with majority of tho people that a certain class of offenders cannt be put to death too riuiokly and should not be given a chance of acquittal by jury trial. This amounts to saying that the ends of justice can bo served better by acting on sudden impulse than sober judgment. There are many cases of crime so litin .ua and so well liroven that they seem to cry for instant vengeance, but if the taw may re set as mo in one in stance where is to be drawn the !ine beyond which the people maj or may not go? The newspapers show that lynch law is being visited not only on the worst offenders but on thote who commit comparatively slight misde meanors. And the evil is grow ing. At Tullahoma, Tenn., about a week ago, a negro boy nineteen years of age was arrested for drunkenness and put i'i jail. For two years previous he had been intemperate, and when under the influence of liquor he w as quarrel some and rowdvisli. Further than this there w ere no charges against him. On the night follow ing his arrest, at 1 o'clock, sis seven masked men broke into th jail, took the boy out and hun him to a tree. This shows to what an extreme the practice of of lynching may be carried, and such instances will become frequent if popular sentiment on this subject does does not change, The public has become familiar with atrocities ecarcely less shocking than this, eo familiar that public sentiment is becoming callous, fli is in ifself is a serious cjneeiuence of the toleration of this evil. But the most consider ation of all in regard to the preva lence and encouragement of lynch law is the undoubted faet that much of this kind of violence prompted ty ierEoial malice and by a desire for desperate adven ture. The persons who hung the boy at Tullahoma undoubtedly Jiau a gtu.ige ngunst him, and the knew they could put him out of the way without danger to themselves. Lynchiug is about the safest sort of adventure that can be indulged in. And if a per on iinrsti lor vengeance ngjinst another, what easier way of grati lying it is there than by laying a plot to implicate him in some heinot'9 crime then 'itlame pub lic sentiment against him and bring him to a shameful death? That many innocent persons are murdered in this way hardly ad rr'ts of a doubt. It the people wculjl view the subject in all its bearings they would put an end t this b'ot on our civilization. The Dry Goods Chronicle, which by the way, is not a pro tectionist paper, says, "in some lines, particularly in wash dress fabrics, the foods made in this country are superior to those of foreign make," and intimaUs broadly that some of the fashion able houses of New York City are selling these superior goods as foreign productions. There are plenty of donkeys in this country who would sooner ouy a foreign article than a home production. The privilege 6hould be freely accorded them, provided, of course, the imported article is made to pay a gold stiff tax for tho right of access to our market. On the other hand, there are many sensible Americans who would sooner have a home-manufactured article if it is as good, and certain ly if it is better than the foreign product. This large class should make it a point to demand Ameri can goods, and shun all places where the home article is sold un der the pretense that it is foreign. Patriotism and self-protection both demand such a course, for the merchant who would represent a creditable American product as foreign would not hesitate to defraud a customer in other ways.
