"This question has caused a
good deal of discussion. Alum is
used by many bakers to whiten
their bread, enabling them to use
an inferior Hour. It is most exten
sively employed as a cheap sub
stitute' for cream of tartar in the
Manufacture of baking powders.
Ii has not been considered im
mediately dangerous; although if
continued it induces eyspepsia
and obstinate cotatipation. But
the fact that many cases of poison
ian have occured lroni tlie use of
alum, puts the question in a more
serious aspect, and prudent people
will exercise caution in the. selec
tion of baking powders.
"Under what conditions then
does this substance formerly used
only for mechanicial or medi
cal purposes become poisonous?
ihey are certainly obscure and at
present we can only suimise what
thcy-mar be. - We suspect that
the cause exists in the individual
poisoned ; some peculiarity ol the
constitution -producing a morbid
change in the "secretions of the
Etomach, with which the alum
combines and forms an active
poison ; or the secretions may be
iieaitoy out in unusual propor
tions, and that these le:-.s or gieater
proportions in commnation with
the alum constitute a poison
"For examole, two parts of
mercury and two parts of chlorine
form Calomel, which " is not
poisonous, but chanue the pronor
tion to oie part mercury and two
parts of clilorine, and we get
corrosive sublimate, which is a
deadly pcison.
"Then again, we know nothing

comes the account of a horrible
tragedy. A Jew named Kaplan,
driven to desperation by an order
to leave Russia, he having been
deprived of a comfortable business
by former decrees, first shot his
ile and then one by one- bis five
children. He afterwards killed
himself Kaplan left a note, stating
