The tendency to concentration of popu lation is marked all over the world, but nowhere is it so notice able as in the United States. In 1SS0 thejre were 286 cities in the would wjtttv population of more tliarj ft.tXtf? In. 1800 that nnmber was; increased to 443. It will be eeerj that this increase is quite ont of proportion to the general in crease in population. "The urban population of the world to-day is per cent of the whole, or nearly one-third, while in 1880 it was orly 22.57 per cent. No doubt this marked increase in the progress of concentration of popu- lation is due in a great measure to the wonderful facilities in comnru nicatiou and transportation and to the general monetony of country life. In the the days when the country people rarely visited the towns, and when the city people made few excursions into the rural districts, many lived, spent their lives and died near where they were bora. But nowadays the country lad and the country lass get a breath of city air early in life and they are soon caught and fascinated by its highly charged perfumes and are never cognizant of its poisons. It is a part of the American youth to love sports and excitements of all kinds, and he soon learns that there is mora 8 iperficial enjoyment in watching the wheels of a big city go round than in attending cainpmeeting a few times a year and listening to the lonesome song of the cricket and the katydid. A moment's consideration will show that this centralization is due to other than purely economic causes. As a matter of fact, people who are accustomed to making a living by manual lal.or and most countiy people are dependent upon hard toil of one sort or another are much surer of a good living in the country than in the city. There is scarcely any BUi'h thing as mere subsistence in the country except in cases of illness or other misfor '.one: but on the other hand evea able-bodied, intelligent and in dustrious workmen who leave the fields and mills of the lands for the street and factories of the city take a palpable risk. But ;'i spite of the personal hazards, the in sincerities, the hypocriticies and the humiliations attendant upon the observance of social caste in great cities, the country youth forsake their home more and more each succeeding year. It is not to gain a better living it ia to ex pei ience a faster life. In the case of those who have had a smatter ing of education it is to enjoy the broader fields of the culture and learning atiorued by the centers of population. The untrained teek the coarser excitements and association of the town. As a natural result many cities are over populated and have a class of paupers, who, by the way, are not generally from the neighboring farms, but are more likely to be foreigners who cannot cope with the honest and industrious natives in a struggle for subsistence. On the other hand, minv of the old pleasures and divisions once dear to the rustic heart are relegated to the almost forgotten past. So will it continue rutil necessity turns the tide and until there shall be a revival or an introduction of proper attractions and excite ments into the country life. It seems very much like the useless opening of a highly dis turbing question, to again start the story that the president of the Southern Confederacy was con cerned in the assassination of of "President Lincoln. Yet it seems that General T. M. Harris of Ritchie county, West Virginia who was a member of the investi gating court martial that con demned Mrs. Surratt is going to publish a book in which lie takes that view of the case, substanti ated by documentary evidence and the stenographic notes of the trial in hia possession. Better let the dead past bury its dead and push on to the living future. The awakening of the poignant memories will not add any per manent valne even to the histoii- cal record of the dastardly and ignoble deed. The census bureau has issued bulletin giving the assessed value of real and personal property in the United States. This shows the total assessed value In 1890 was $24,249,589,804. an increase since 1880 of $7,346,596,201, an amount equivalent to the true value of all the property as re turned by the census of 1850. The absolute wealth of the Nation is estimated at $62,610,000,000, or $1 ,000 per capita, against $870 per capita in 1880. Two men are risking their lives, and enduring great hardship and suffering to sail a little boat hardly larger than a wash tub along the Atlantic coast in the open ocean for the reward of the notoriety it will bring, nothing else. It is high time that all such endeavors should "object the participants to the application of the straight jackets in an aaylnm, and see if the ezamble will not put a stop to sucn tooiisnnesa.
