Sisters, was due up on Monday
night, but failed to reach here,
nor did she put in an appearance

gon Pacific company has decided

A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS-

Mr. Ans Marshall, while haul
ing hay near this city yesterday,
met with a severe accident. One
wheel of the wagod came oil",
throwing bint to the ground. A
bale of hay struck his leg in fall
ing, breaking both bones below
the knee. He was brought to tiiis
city and the bioken limb dressed
by lra. Maston tic Davis.
News has been received in this
city of a fatal accident at Sweet
Home. A young man, whose
nam? could not be ascertained,
was hauling hay. His team ran
away and he was thrown oil under
the wheels. He was kicked by
the horses and run over by the
wagon and crushed to death. He
was a German aged about 20.
A farm hand working for Thos.
Froman yesterday was hauling
straw. He fell otf of the load and
was severely bru:sed and cut
about the head. Dr. Kilts, of this
city, dressed his wounds.
The young woman who was shot
at the Rubs House Tuesday even
ing is still in a critical condition.
The attending physician. Dr.
Davis, thinks she will recover.
She was accompanied by a young
man named Cunningham, an em
ploye in the Oregon Pacific office
at Corvallis. The woman's right
name is Mrs. Truck. Her husband
lives in Independence.
The fourteen year-old-son of
Daniel Raines, who resides near
Mill City, had his arm torn oil' in
the harvest field on Sunday. The
lad was working about a threshing
machine, and caught his left arm
in a pulley, tearing the arm from
its socket. The wound was prop
erly creased and the unfortunate
boy was alive at last accounts, and
may recover.

McNeil, of the Union Pacilic has
returned from a trip over the
lines of this division. He reports
harvesting pretty well over in the
Walla Walla country and well ad
vanced in the Palouse region.
"Grain is coming in rapidly," he
said, "and we are loading 400 cars
per day. 1 be farmers arefeeling
good ou account of the big price
they are receiving for their grain.
The railroads are well prepared to
take care of the crop and will move
it rapidly, but it is possible that
on account of the large amount to
be ottered (or immediate shipment
I here may be off times when the
demand for cars will temporarily
exceed the facillities of the com
panies."

reasonable excuse for it, as the
ship had to have ballast, and e.ial

in Newcastle ; but for some of the
leading business men of Albany to
organize a company to engage in
the fruit business . in Southern
Oregon is too deep for me to find
an excuse for.
Southern Oregon already has
much of the Iruil business Miat

vicinity, without Albany business
men giving it anotiier boost and
Albany a kick.
1 am a etrong adherent of liberal
advertising, but must confess that

will be a genteel sufficiency. For
all kinds ot fruit, berries and veg
etables, the vicinity of Albanv
cannot be excelled, and w; y Al

away to a place no mure produc
tive, organize a company and bond
a thousand acres of land for fruit
raising, is dillicult to explain, un
less they wish to discourage new
comers who are beginning to en
gage in the hueiness here.
It is a fact that the (inept
peaches in the Albany market aie
raised right here, and they sell for
50 cents more a box than do any
others, while the home of the
famous Oregon prunes is in the
Wihamette Val'ey. of which Al
bany is the hub. l'he success of
the Salem cannery, and the known
productiveness of this locality for
iiuit, vegetables and berries of all
kinds, is sufficient argument that
such an establishment as the one
these Albjny men propose to start
elsewhere ought to be built up
right here at home.
Albany business men should
learn the value of patronizing
honie enterprise, if they wish to
build up this city instead of some

A woman in Atlanta is the
mother of twenty-one children, all
living and unmarried. The young
est is twins, and have just been
born.
The "city article" of the London
Times informs its readers that
Chicago is destined to become one
of the greatest grain growing states
in the Union.
There is a post at the corner of
the public niuare at Fairmont,
Mo., which gets a bolt ot light
ning from nearly every thunder
storm that comes along. Three
men, five horses and twenty or
thirty sheep have been electrocuted
at the spot.
Railway statistics show that the
American takes twenty-seven
trips a year, the Englishman nine
teen, the Belgian eleven, the
Frenchman, the German, Swede,
Xorweigian and the Spaniard live
each, while the Turk, the Swiss
and the Italian take one each.
A negro living in Georgia met
his death in a curious manner last

went out in the breakers Tuesday
morning and picked up a two

Last Saturday the thrashing
crew ot -Moses Miller discovered a

a contract of grading thirty-five
miles of the Great Northern rail
road, from Albany Falls west of
Little Spokane and he is now
sending his teams and scrapers to
commence work.
The cattle in the vicinity of
Sulphur Springs, Benton county,
are evidentlya-sthetic to the last
degree. One old cow, making in
vestigations of a dinner basket,
devoured a hand mirror, but, be
ing disturbed, was not long in
finding another basket. Here
she ate the top of the basket
and then a cake, never stopping
to take it out of the napkin iii
which it was wrapped. She wa
dis covered in time to save a table
cloth, hut afterward finished her
meal by breaking into a tent and
eating the cabbage. ,
DEADLY AMMONI A H M ICS.
The Lancaster, Ohio, Republican
gives the details of a terrible ex
plosion of an ammonia tank in a
local brewery. Four persons were
overcome by the annuoDia fumes
and were restored with great
difficulty. One of them was a
three year old child playing
some distance away. As soon as
the ammonia fumes atruck it, it
dropped as though hit by a bullet.
A woman w ho ran to his assistance
was also overcome and fell sense
less. The engineer was blown a
distance of twenty feet, and al
though not seriously injured, was
prostrated so by the poisonous
fumes that he did not recover for
several days. Still another man,
a distance away, was rendered
insensible.
The use of ammonia in various
manufactures has greatly increased
of late, and accidents ' are of
frequent occurrence, owing to
ignorance of its qualities. Tin re

accidents as that at Lancaster, but
the ell'ects of its daily absorption
into the system are very injurious
Men who work in its manufacture
suiter from this slow ammonia
poisoning. Its effect is first notic
ed in their complexions, which as
sumed an unhealthy, blotched up
pearence.
In this connection Professor
P.lvth, Health Officer of the
Marylebone district in London,
cites the cases of men who work
in guano factories where ammonia
is given oil' freely. There is notic
ed among them a peculiar dis
coloration tf the skin oi the nose
and forehead. A daily absorption
of ammonia, in very minute
quantities, will cause the com
plexion to lose something of its
natural freshness. Professor
Clillbrd Mitchell in his chemistry
says ammonia poisoning may be
so prolonged that death will not
occur for several months. The
length of time he gives for an
immediately fatal dose to kill is
four minutes.
The use of ammonia in the
manufactures and its abuse as a
food adulterant esiecially in bak
ing powders is so rapidly increas
that its dangerous qualities
ought to be more generally
known.
