Arrives Depart ta 11. 13pm '13. SO ptn FlthriM., 3.40pm 1 7. 45 am A CROP OF WHEAT, The extent and condition of the great cereal crop of this country . and eipecially of this coast, n a matter of the greatest interest to every individual. At the present time it may safely be said that all vicisitudes are past and that our over average crop of wheat is raised, harvested, and practically safely housed, and the leading piestion now is will a good price be maintained. That question, too, seems to be settled in the atnuaative as near as can be judged froa all sources of information attainable. Upon the general situation of the crop throughout the country a late number of the Chicago Herald says that there is no longer any ground for a doubt that the wheat crop of the present year in the Lnited States is by far the largest ever prod iced in the coun try. The Cincinnati Trice Current, which is as far as possible removed from sensationalism in such mat ters, places the total yield at 5S5, 000,000 bushels. Its computation for winter wheat are based on special returns from its own cor respondents from all districts in the West, and on what it regards as worthy data for other portions of the ceuntry, and the result is 400,000,000 bushels, against 255, 344,000 bushels last year. Its estimates for the spring wheat crop, partly based on special correspondence, "suggest approxi mately 1S5,000,000 bushels." The I'rice Current's estimates repre sent an average yield for winter wheat of 15.4 bushel per acre, and for spring wheat of 14.25 bushels, making a general average for the entire crop of 15 bushels. These estimate imply the maintenance of favorable conditions to the end of the crop season, and a9 they have been maintained so far since the estimates were made the results may be accepted as conservative. The Price Current figures that there will be 200,000, 000 bushela for export. But the country can easily spare consider ably more than that. The Price Current assumes that the require ments for home consumption wiil be 300,000,000. They may be as high as that, but not necessarily, i That quantity is at the rate of more than 5'i bushels to each inhabi tant. But the returns cf the de partment of agriculture show that since 1880 the consumption has ranged from 4.49 to 6.00 bushels jer capita, the largest consump tion having been reached in 1884, when the average price of wheat was only 05 cents per bushel, which was the lowest on record fur many years. The average con sumption is not much more than .1 bushels per capita, and is not very likely to exceed that if the price is above 05 cents per bushel. If the domestic consumption should not exceed that there would be 240,000,000 bushels for export. According to the I'rice Current's estimate of &v,000,UUt bushels, thej crop of this year exceeds the largest previously secured that of 1884 by more than 72,000,000 bu shels, or 14 per tent. That would mean very low prices if the cereal crops of other countries were equal to the average. But, disregarding the sensational estimates that have been sent abroad, there still seems to be no doubt that the supply from other Bources this year will Le much below the aver age, and that we can sell even 240, 000,000 bushela of wheat to the people of other countries unless the speculators become too extor tionate in their demands, in which case we will be lelt with an enor mous surplus which will have to be disposed of a last at slaughter prices. With good sense and mod eration on the part of speculators this may be a golden year for the farmers of tbe wheat belt. One cannot but wonder at the amount of public attention that is given to pugilistic encounters, and the vast majority of respectable and good society people that really . care for them. A careful view of the participants in these fistic ex hibitions of the brute in man, will demonstrate that they are not the ones that good people as a rule take to, that is if they were en gaged in any other profession. Tne Chronicle says that the per sistence with which pugilists get into barroom brawls was illus trated in the disgraceful fight be tween the Australian Hall and his manager, "Parson" Davies. That the fighter was not killed was sim ply a bit of good fortune, as the manager used a knife with great execution. It is significant that what is called the manly art can not boast of a single sober, repu table exponent. Nine-tenths of the professional pugilists of the world are braggarts and bullies. Tbeii highest ambition is to keep La saloon and pose for the admira lion oi wie puuiic uiai eeco buujv thing divine in big development of biceps and small development of brain. It is eaid that in the march of progress in New York City, just at piesent, many very tine build ings are being torn down, to make room for still finer ones. That is undoubtedly the case, but the re cent disaster there in the collapse of a building, causing the horrible destruction to life, shows that some old unBafe buildings remain, for the one that collapsed had been pronounced unsafe a number of years ago. It would be economy of human life if the old unsafe buildings were first looked after. Beautiful Women.
