THE SA VloUR'S CO A T, Several hundred Americans are among tbe throng that baa (locked to Treves, to witness the exhi bition of the Butiosed coat of Jesus of Nazareth, which had been unveiled and repoeed to pub lic view in the cathedral their. To those who have not there atlases with them it mar be as weli to mention that Treves is a city of Rhenish Prussia, the oldest municipality in Germany, and always famous aa a pet of the Roman Empire, and afterwards as one of the Koman church. If the coat of ur Saviour was to be dis covered, no better locality could have "been selected. There is some ditfereuce of opinion among accredited authorities as to whether this coat could still be in existence, and, inasmuch as at lanar n, It ah o.i n . I ef tfri a nili, sens have gone across the Atlantic to investigate perhaps it would not be improper to assist them through extracts from the holy record. St. Matthew, perhaps the coolest of the recorders of the time, says, 'chapter 27., verse o5) : "And they crucilied him and parted his garments, casting lots." Mark says (chapter 15, verse 24) : "And when they had crucified hiui they parted his garments, casting lots upon them what every man should take." Luke bays (chapter 23, verse 34 : "And they parted Lis raiment and cast lots." Tlus three of the four of the disciples who wrote upon the sub ject agree that the Saviour's raiment was cut into pieces and gambled for; but John, the fourth, differs with all of them, and it is from his version that comes the wiiijely prevailing belief of the preservation and present exist ence of Christ's coat. John says (chapter K, verses 23 and 24;: "Now, the coat was without seam woven from the top throughout. They said, therefore among them selves: Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be." Hence, from St. John's version comes the belief that the coat, won in the rattle by a soldier of Augustus, was carried by hiui to Treves and taat it was there dis covered. That Augustus was par ticularly proud of Treves at that time, and that he Bent many of his soldiers there, ate established facts. This game coat has an interest ing history, Thefhst solemn ex hibition of the coat was in 1190, w hen it was placed under the new altar. There it rested until 1511, wueu Emperor Maximilian wished it to be exhibited, and it was done It was shown several times again during that century, and also in In tbe latter part of the seventeenth century, when the French, under Louis XIV., in vaded Germany, the precious relic was hidden in the fortress of r.nrenureiuerteiu, where it was kept until after the seven years' war. After the last exhibition in 175-1 it was brought back to Treves, but a few years later it had to be removed inte the interior of i Jer- many, when Napoleon invaded the country. In 1810 Napoleon permitted another solemn exlii bition, but expressly forbade miracles to be performed, yet the report of that time says : " iouty patients, who were wheeled up, walked away alone." The Treves newspapers are full of accounts of miracles that took place at the ex hibition of 1544. The whole exhibition, however, looks like a modern fake. Re ports from Treves say that ven ders of photographs, rosaries and images, drove a lively trade and the pickpockets were rampant. Late at night throngs of people were still besieging the doors the catiiedrai ana multitudes were tiling past tlis relic, which is faded and brown, its silken covering being almost worn away. CAPITAL PUX1SHMEST. The matter of capital punish ment, in one of its numerous phases, was brought to public notice in the case that has just been brought to light in Beatrice. Nebraska, and on which the Mil waukee Sentinel comments : 'Four years ago the people of Beatrice, out in Nebraska, wit nessed the hanging of John Marion, who had borne a good reputation until he was accused of the murder of a man named Cam eron, lie and Cameron had been together on a wagon trip fifteen years ago. Cameron was not seen again ana some years alter a body was found and the conclusion was that it was the body of Cam eron. Marion's mends, wno aid not believe he could be guilty of the murder, fought the case ties perately, but four years ago the last court upheld verdict of murder in the first degree and Marion was haneed. Mr. Wvmore, Marion's uncle, was so well convinced of Marion's innocence that he did not cease to search for Cameron, even after Marion was hanged. He has just found the murdered man alive and well in a Kansas town. Here is an innocent man man hanged, a family disgraced, perhaps wife and children deprived of support, on the strength of circumstantial evidence. Under the Wisconsin law, Marion would have been sent to prison for life, and on the dis coveiy of his innocence some reparation would have been possi ble. In the case of a guilty man, life imprison met protects the pub lic ; in a case where subsequent testimony establishes innocence, the public is not powerless to do something to repair its error." If the element of revenge could be entirely eliminated from all in fluence inthe matter, capital pun ishment would cease to exist at once. Certainly it should have no influence but that it does must be I PIrcnt to every thinking person who considers the subjects in all its bearings. O. K. T Honest Kesulte.-O. K. T.
