He knew about as much of what he was talking auout as the cows do of geology. The greater portion of Crook county lies in what is failed the arid district of Eastern Oregon. The oldest residents here came to the country over twenty years ago, anil alt ot them agree in the statement that the rainfall in this region has quite perceptibly im-reat-ed in that time. Numerous satisfactory proofs iniaht be given to show that the annual rainfall of Eastern Oregon is on the increase, instead of being on the decrease. Excurxlon to New rt. Miller, the stolen goods man of the dish ing outfit, and Chinaman Sam .ing, charged with obtaining money under false pretenpes fiom San Wa, and he found the cell empty. The birds had tlown. Examination showed that they had sawed three of the heavy iron bars of the back grated window completely oil", top and bottom, and a fourth one at the bottom and bent it aside, giving them an aperture large enough to emerge from. This placed them in the back enclosed shed, from which they scaled an eight-foot wall ii the shadow of a tree and they were free. Mr. Scott thinks they had not been gone fifteen minutes when he discovered their absence. Vigilant search was immediately instituted, but as late as 3 a. m, no trace was found. The cheek of the man Miller was exhibited in the following notes, written on envelopes and found upon a stool in the cell : Albany, Ore., Aug. 10th, 18U1. Mr. Wooks Dear Sir: Please pay to Mr. Scott, the sheriff, the money due me and oblige Your humble servant, Josei'H L. Miller. "Mr. Scott: Will you please get tiiis money and keep it until I call for it. It is somewhere near seventy dollars ($70.00). Be sure to get it for it is coming to me, and I want you to keep it for me. If anything should happen that I did not get time to call for it, then it is yours. J. L. Miller." Mr. Scott sajs the Chinamen had been very solicitous to get Sam Sing out, and had flocked in to see him until he was obliged to put a stop to it and shut them out. There is no doubt that they had assistance from the outside, as the watch at the jail Ins been pei sistent and thorough. Just What Linn Should Do. The countv court of Marion county id seriously considering the proposition of purchasing a larui of two or four hundred acres, in the vicinity of Turner, to be used as a county pojr farm. And in connection with this project the court will proceed to Turner on Friday of this week fcr the pur ine ot viewing the proposed site. Linn county is badly in need of such a place, as enough money is paid out by the county court each month for keeping' paupers to more thfiu pay the running ex penses of a good-sized farm and interest on the money invested. A Lake LaltUli Victim Gets SIO.OOO In the case of John B. The jury awarded him $10,000 damages and the company moved for a new trial, which has heen denied. Lock Cp the Hause. The circus with its burglars and other theives has come and gone. Sells Bros. Bros, have a big show, but they also have a big gang of theives attached to it. Several attempts were made by peanut venders and ticket salesmen to "hold out" in making change, but we believe they were all unsuc cessful. The average (iarlield county is too smart to be swindled by those whom he knows to be professional robbers. East Wash ingtonian. flayed With Matches. Little Annie Laura Fenzl. only three years old, procured matches unknown to her parents, at their home in lacoma, on Sunday, anil going into the yard by herself proceeded to play with them. There must be something in the atmosphere of Salem, this summer that causes a sort of idiosym-racy to creep over the people. The Statesman came out with an account of a tire, which never occured but which was so vividly port:ayed in the written account that the nerves of readers were shattered almost beyond recovery. We see by the last Journal that some practical j'kerin almost the the same line of conduct has raised another temper debt roving it not nerve destioying false report 1 he Journal says : A committee of Co. H. without the fear of the law or judge lynch went atomic Sunday night routed out a Lot of the militia boys with a report that the longshormen were burn ing up Astoria, and that a special train was awaiting to take them to the scene of carnage at mid night. A great many of the 1 oys saw blood in the moon, made their wills, said a hurried farewell to parents and sweethearts, clime into their uniforms and hastened to the fray. At the armory there was a congregation of manly forms and courageous faces readv to march upon the enemy w hen lo it was ail a noax and there was some swearing."
