Weston announces that that city has two physicians and there is no need oi sendim; lo nei;hloiilig places for medical assistance. Pendleton has a curiosity in the fo ui of a burglar alarm that really did sound ai! a'arm w hen, a few nights ti;:o, llieives tried to enter a siore w here one of these appli ances was in use. The di-covery has been made at I'.aker City ol a hand of voutliful brijjands, none less than l.'I years old. Their cache was also dis covered and a nayin load of plunder, the result of their roh-i belies, leeovered. J. H. l.oan has a nest of Mild cas on his ranch, four miles up Pine creek, near Weston. His dor ran an old one up a sappling a t;w ieet away from him recently, but he had no gun and decided not to tackle him bare handed. The Chinamen of Baker City were greatly excited a few eve nings ago over the arrival at that place oi a Portland highbinder, who threatened to clean out China town. He was induced to refrain from doing so, however, by the Oliieeld. Since the water has been turned oll'the mill race at .Salem hundreds of li.-;h and eels that used to sport in its swift current are dying from t! e eil'ects of the lack of water, .hist below the cannery's water w heel there seems to I e a colony of eels, and a number of boys en gaged in picking up both the live one and those that were dead for the purpose of selling them to the j Chinese. There is something strangly de ceptive about the Willamette river, says the Salem Journal, and for bathing purposes the main cbaunel is a dangerous place for bathing. This was learned by a party of young men w ho were in dulging in a swim about half a mile below the big bridge Monday evening. Undertaking to swim the dark blue stream one of them was tiii.ij.ued bofore getting across the swift current and had great bihculty in reaching the other hank. His clothes had to be carried to him across the bridge. EAL ESTATE SALES. 1. K. Btidd et ux to Portland Construction Co., one half interest in liO'.i 12 acres in townships !) and 10, S. ' , II ulrl iHK of the Lumber Kirtgx, The census department bulletin on the lumber industry states that. in the year ending Mayol, 18H0, nearly 1 1 1,000 persons were em ployed in Michigan, Wisconsin anil Minnesota lumber districts, receiving over $0,000,000 in wages. The investigations of the census bureau indicate that the industry in these states will ceaee within six ears, so far as it depends on lands held by individuals. Already employers have begun to prepare fji- the future by buying large areas of timbered lands in other states. In Montana and Idaho they have bicoineowners of over a million acres of lir and cedar, which it is estimated will yield 5, 000,000.01)0 feet board measure ment, of merchantable lumber. In California, Oregon and Wash ington they have acquired over 1 .200,000 ol hr and redwood, and the estimated vield is nearlv 28,- Ooo:ooo,(M.O feet. In Virginia, Not th Carjhna, Georgia, Florida, Alabama. Mississippi, Jniisiana. Arkansas anil Missouri their hold ings amount to 1,400,000 acres of yellow pine and cypress, w hich, it is estimated, will yield a total of over II, 000,0( KbOOO feet, and in We.-t Virginia, Kentucky, Tennes see, Ohio and Illinois they own p;x, oiin acres of yellow popular and h ird woods, w hich it is esti mated will produce a total of over 1,100,000,000 feet. These figures seem prodigious, and vet they make an aggregate of less than 15,000,000,000 feet.which is less than live times the aggregate output of white pine lumber than from the mills of the northwest ern s'ates in the vear 18!K), and less by 18,000,000,000 feet than the estimated amount of merchant able lunil cr standing on private or corpoiate holdings in I he states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Min nesota. On May 31, 1S!0, the census bureau bad been unable to ascertain how much land still in these states belongs to the I'nited States, and how much to each of these states respectively, and the opinion is expressed that the tim ber thereon comprises substan- tially the entire reserve upon v hich dependence can be placed l..i - futiiru unniiliiiu fri.li-l tlio Vnrtli. west alter the year JNeariy all of the merchantable white pine in the I'nited States is found in the three states nientioied. Thn drama is well worth seeing. Mr. Staley as Andreas Holler, a Swiss Guide, was natural. His humor ijuiet and effective, and his singing sweet and expressive. In his moments of dramatic foice lie evidenced the accomplished actor. THE STATE FAIR- The Board of Arricaltare Offers Epoclal Premlumf, Heretofore the farmers' organi zations have made objections to the state fair because the state board of agriculture offered them no encouragement to prepare ex hibits. But things are changed this year, and the old objection is obsolete, says the Salem , States man. The board this year offers to agricultural organizations of Oregon special premiums amount ing to f.o'.K) for the best exhibits of grains, grasses, fruits, and veget ables. Best exhibit of grains, 1st, $50; 2d, $25. BeBt exhibit of grasses, 1st, $50 : 2d, 125. Best exhibit of fruits, 1st, $50; 2d, $25. Best exhibit of vegetables, 1st, $50; 2d, $25. Every indication is that the fair will be bigger and better this year than ever before. Already an un usual'y large number of booth privileges have been constructed, that it is only July. A. F. Miller, of Portland, has been aptointed superintendent ol the fruit division, which is divided into eight classes, vi-: Fall apples, winter apples, peaches, pears, plums and prunes, quinces, grapes and sweepstakes. Notice to Water Conaminerft, Water is being wasted to such an extent and so unnecessarily that we are obliged to enforce a strict observance of the tule in re gard to hours for sprinkling, viz: Fiom 5 to ll a. m. and from 0 to 10 o'clock r. m. , and to caution al. users of water to guard against leaks from faucets or other fix tures. The continuous running of water through closets or other tixtures, or permitting hoBe streams or sprinklers to run all night, will be deemed sutlicient cause for shutting the water off from premises where allowed without further notice.
