Is the matter of manufacturing beet sugar in this country, it is no said that the article can b-i made here much cheaper than anywhere else. This is the verdict of experts upon the subject. A ftctory for the making and refin ing of beet eugar will be started in California by August 1st, and if it proves successful a second one also will be erected. These it said is backed up by eastern capital. The Chronicle says: "Tho?e Americans who are dispo ed to look with doubt, if not distrust, upon the protective tariff now have a chance to study a great object lesson. It is a favorable dogma of free trade that artificially culti valed industries are detrimental to the interests of a country, their favorite illustration being the growing of pineapples in Patagonia or some equally inhospitable country. They lay great stress on the value of natural products and insist that protection is, as Glad stone called it, morally wrong, because it attempts to interfere with the procession of nature. How completely the history of beet sugar refutes their arguments. From the very first beet sugar had been a protected product, in one way or another, either by subsidies or bounties or drawbacks or some of the different kinds of subven tion. And wlat has been the result? The price ot sugar has been reduced until sugar is no longer a lux try but an article of prime necessity within the means of every consumer. It is entirely safe to say without the supply of beet sugar at the present day cane sugar would be seding at not less than 20 or 25 cents a pound, as it did before Ihe manu facture of beet sugar was begun." In all the talk and argument about the burdens of our govern ment and the corruption of poli tics, there are very few who really consider what we are in compari son with the restof the world. The Argunaut eays that this is the best government and this is the best country in the world. The citi zens of this republic are, on the average, better clothed and fed an I educated than any other paople. They are fuller of life, more pro gressive, quicker to take advantage of the forces of nature than any othir of the children of men. Here the (burdens of the government are lightest, the responsibilities of the individual greatest, and here with out doubt, are to be worked out the most important problems of social science. Here, in America, is a finer sense of what is due from man to man than you will find in other lands. We do, not cringe to those w hom chance has crowned. We stand erect. Our sympathies are strong and quick. Generosity, is almost a national failing. The hand of honest want i9 raiely left unfilled. Great calamities open the hearts and hands of all. Here you will find democracy in the tamily, republicanism ly the tire side. Say what you will, the family is apt to be patterned after the government. If a kin;: is at the head of a nation, the husband imagines himself the monarch of the home. In this country, we have carried into the family the idea on which the government if based. Here husbands and wives are beginning to be equal?. The highest tent of civilization is the treatment of women and children. By this standard, America stands first among the nations. There is a magnitude, a ecope, a grandeur, a boil t the country, an amplitude that, satisfies the heart and im agination. We have our faults! and our virtues, but our country is the best. No American should ever write a line that ran be sneer ingly quoted by an enemy of the trreat republic. The folly of prominent men, who ari leaders in politics, in al lowing theniHlves to drift into actions that will not hear the scrutiny of integrity and virtue, is illustrated in the case of Parnell the Irish leader. "The crushing defeat of Parnell 'a candidate in the Car low district for the seat made vacant by the death of The U'Gor man Malion is the severest blow w hich the late leader of the Irish party has encountered. . When he married Mrs. O'Shea he had high hopes of a return to his former political ascendency, and he made the Carlow election a test case. J He toak the stump himself for his candidate, using every endeavor to secure his election, but labor was ell in vain. His man was, as we should call it here, snowed under." Apparently the Irish leader is to be leader no longer. His one action in departing from the path of vir tue is the death knell of his use fulness, and prospectively the an nihilation of the Irish liberal party, fjr it appears to be impossible to find a leader capable of fiilling the lace and successfully le iding the party. How much the action of the Catholic clergy in opposing Parnell is responsible for thi st it? of affairs is difficult to say but undoubtedly vtry much, for they dominate the mass of the Irish people to a great extent. ParncIVs fall notes an epoch in political history, in one respect at least, for the time was that a fault like his would have had no in fluence upon the political standing of its perpetrator.
