friends of F company in Albany
are doubtless wondering how we
are enduring soldier life at Cam)
Grant. You correspondent will
detail a part of the events of the
last twenty-four hours. The sun
shines down upon us relentlessly,
and tue boys laces that were so
blistered the fore part of the week
that they could not turn their
heads, are a solid mass of scales
to-day. They are getting veiy
tired and will not be sorry when
the week is over.
We wer) reviewed yesterday by
Governor Fennoyer and we pre
a -nted a very unitiun apearance.
Our company performed quite an
important position in battallion
drill. We received the cjlors
from the colonel's headquarter!
and conveyed them to the field
and presented them. At :.') we
passed in re."iew tefore the gover
nor, after which the governor at
tempted to cross the officers line
without being escorted by an
officer in uniform, and was
promptly halted by a sentinel and
held until rescued by the ollicer of
the day. Perhaps the governor
thinks there is some military dis
cipline being observed in the
camp.
There was a dense throng on the
camp ground ast eveniig, and
the dancing platform was promptly
tilled with a gay throng of dancers
after the band concei t, which oc
curred immediately after dress
parade. The dancing was kept
up until nearly midnight. About
2 o'clock the members of F com
pany were aroused from their
slumbers by a loud cry of "halt !
halt!" and immediately there was
a grand stampede and some great
charges made into the tents of t
company closely followed by the
officer of the day, who pounced
upon them before they could get
their clothes oil. They had run
the outside guard but the inner
officer nabbed them. They de
nied running the gauntlet but the
ollicer demanded their names, and
said: "What are you doing with
your clothes on, and what makes
you breathe so hard?" Well it is
needless to say that the boys were
dragged off to the guard house
where they will be likely to lan
guiahtjd during the rest of the en
campment. rVe will withhold
their names on account of their
previous good conduct. They pre
sented a sorry appearance out
with the shovel gang doing police
duty this morning.
After battallion drill this morn
ing we passed in review before the
inspector general. I g.iees we
were all right as he paid us a higii
compliment, liuard mount is now
being formed. One more detail
and the boys will rest easier, as
every member will then -have
served.
The routine of regular army dis
cipline is being regu.arly observed
and in consequence the guard
nou-e claims us quota oi victims.
Those who attended thinking
they would only be required to
play soldier are badly disap
pointed, as the duties required are
numerous. To begin with the
guardsman rises at tne early hour
of 4 Jfyi a. m. and attends roll call
fifteen minutes later. Then lie i-
required to spread his blanket and
loop up the sides of his tent and
put his various accoutrements in
order. During this time those
who require medical attention are
formed in synods and marched to
the hospital.
At 4:45 companies are formed
and inarched out on the parage
ground and drilled by their re
spective captains until the recall
is sounded one hour later, w hen
after dismissal the welcome sound
of the mess call is heard and the
fall in for breakfast, after which I
the men return to their quarters
and pin down the sides of the
tents and fold up their blankets.
At ten minutes of eight all tiie
companies fall in and are
drilled as a battallion until
9:40. After dismissal of the bital
lion the men detailed form each
company for guard duty for the
succeeding twenty-four "hours are
formed in squad by the first ser
geants and marched out for parade
previous to guard mounting.
Those fortunate enough not to
ba included in this detail are
not called upon for duy until
after dinner.
At half past three battallion
drill is again called, and recall is

fill in for supper. After supper
the captains form their companies
f r insriection and march out on
the regimental parade ground for
dress parade, at the close of which
ceremony the band leads the
march past the reviewing oflicer.
The evening $un is tired, the tUg
lowered and the company dis
missed until roll call at .::!(. At
10 o clock taps are sounded and
all lights must be out and quiet
prevail.
The privates have been Ruhj fe
ted to the severest army discipline
on a hot field without a tree for
shad, and the b'ys are nearly
tired 'out. Whether" the welfare of
the Oregon National (iuard his
boen promoted by this "outing"
remains to be seen.

more fighting at cross purposes al

for what it has considered the best
interests of the city, and lias no
