' 3.40pm7.45am WORLDS FAIR. Tbe unexampled interest that is being manifested, in all parts of the world, in our approaching World's Fair at Chicago, is indeed very satisfactory. It is said that the wires beneath the sea have been bringing the words of great men in other nations who are thinking and talking of the expos ition. AH their expressions are kindly and enthusiastic. Our own states, too, are taking hold with enthusiasm, and the indications are that the greatest gathering of nations ever held will be in Chicago, at the Columbian Exposition. The Chronicle comments that as the exposition will not open until May, 18i3, nearly two years from now, the foreign interest manifested is more than gratify ingit is remarkable. It shows conclusively that Europe will send us the best of everything she has, and that the World's Colum bian Exposition will be all that its name implies. No other nation in the world is situated so favorably as we are for the purposes of a World's Fair. We are on terms of the most per fect amity with every country in the world which has a govern ment, and there is no prospect of such amicable relations being in terrupted or interfered with. We are universally respected and admired, our institutions are com mended even by nations which would not adopt them, and, most of all, our weight and strength as a nation are fully appreciated. At the same time we must not forget that tbe exhibits of foreign nations will be made, as a rule, on i. strictly business ba9is. What every country in the world has in mind is the enormous purchasing power of the United States, sur passing that of any other nation. Our visitors will a'.l have sorae-tl-ing to sell, and they have not the slightest prejudice against American money. The world knows, even if our American free traders forget or ignore it, that the United States is the grea'.eet market of the world. We have extended to all nations an invita . tion to bring us samples of their wares of every kind, and they will not decline the invitation. display in this direction. The only question is will her people do it. The peddler nuisance still flour ishes in some localities, although the spread of business and the enlargement of transportation facilities has long since made the peddler an unnecessaiy append age. In Chicago they are trying to suppress the nuisance. Several cases of gross assault, as well as many cases of petty theft, have been traced to the peddler, and it is probable that a license law will be passed heavy enough to ru'e these pests out of every big city. Time is too piecious in the busi ness district to permit the peddlur to flourish, so he is driven to the residence quarter, w here he bull dozes women and children if he can get an entrance to the house. There is no excuse for the exist ence of the peddler in any city. Time was when the peddler was reputable, but now that he can't be distinguished from the tramp it is high time to remove him. The attractive force of an elec trical current found an illustration in a Tennessee town recently. A doctor was driving over the track of an electric railroad, when his horse commenced rearing and plunging. An examination showed that the horse had left his shoes sticking fast to the track, the nails being straightened out in the operation. Chief Buchanan of (he World's Fair commission, has sent out letters to all of the state boards of agriculture advising them as to the design of the proposed forestry building. The building will be about 200 by 500 feet, and will occupy a commanding position on the lake shore. It will be de signed to illustrate in its construe tion and arrangement tbe forestry wealth of the world. The archi tecture is of a rustic character and will make a beautiful effect. A feature will be the wide colonnade along the fro it of the building and across either end. The support ing ccolums of this colonnade will be trunks of trees with the bark on, representing the characteristic woods of the United States. This will not only add to the unique beauty of the structure, but will furnish the states an opportunity to show specimens of their trees. These tree trunks will be twenty- five feet long, about twenty inches in diameter at the base, tapering gradually to the top. Each trunk will have attached to it a tablet on ... l : i 1 1 i . . wuicn win oe engraved the name of the state furnishing, it, the name of the tree, and the estimate of the quantity of such timber in the state or territory. Chief Buchanan asks each state board of agriculture to send on three of such tree trunks.
