Ii the internal di&teiitioua in demo cratic ranks in New York state are not healed befoie the met-tinx of the convention the result will be so decided a change in the heretofore anticipated programme aa to amount almost to a 'evolu tion. It seems quite likely that Governor Hill may be aide, if he j id so determined, to defeat Air.! Cleveland's nomination without securing his own. In other words, It is almost a settled fact that if Mr. Cleveland is not the nominee of the party New York will not supply the presidential standard bearer. The St. Louis Republic, one of the prominent democratic newspapers of the tountry says: "Word comes from Washington that several of our highly esteemed democratic senators are al ut to make up their minds to rule out Mr. Cleveland from among the number of democratic candidates possible for consideration by the democratic national convention next year. The Republic believes it can count among its friends all those whose names are mentioned in this connection, as it certainly counts itself among theirs. It they will be advised by the Re public they will reason nure wisely concerning this matter. In the first place, Mr. Cleveland is certainly the ranking democrat of the party, and it is utterly im possible t J exclude him from a consideration which every demo crat gives him mentally in bring- bis own miud to bear on tha ques tions of the day. And, again, al i questions affecting the presi- d tli till nomination in IS'.-' are ndw "in the air." There has not been in the memory of the oldest politician a period of greater political uncertainty not even the period during which the Whig party was di. rganized. Something is going to happen in 18!)2, and it will be decisive, but nooneknows.no one can have any adequate idea of what it will be, though there is room for the reasonable hope that it will be the en, lapse of Civil War politics and t ie inauguration of an era in v hii.h no party will have such a li jld or power that it can afford to be radical in any direction. While free coinage is highly important when considered alone, it is only one of many issues w hich vo to makeup the existing situation, and they are raeh indeed who hasten to the conclusion that free coinage is the pivot on which everything turns. Mr. Cleveland's views on this point or that may not exactly coincide with the views of the Republic or of demo cratic senators, but the Republic isinot rash enough on thtt account to JkttLinpt to sa n lS'.'l wiat Bhall or shall not '.e in 1S!L Nor cAi democratic feiiutors thus de termine the iature." It does not t require even a close watch of poli tical events to see that Cleveland will have a hard 'me of it "m t lie convention and a much harder time if he is nominated. It is becoming a settled belief in New York, that silver will, before long, become one of the specula tive leaders, and this may begin O show itself almost every cay. A scarcity of gold in Europe has also compelled Spain to be a buyer of fcilver. Spain has been on the verge of bankruptcy for so long that the government has intro duced a iiiianei.tl measure which increases the use of silver in that country. Bullion dealers claim that the shipments of silver to France, where it will be kept on storage, will begin ii earnest be fore the end of the week. F Co., Oregon National Guards, of this city, will go into ther first annual encampment at Eugene, along with the other companies cf their ngirnent, on Saturday next. Should the raina continue until that time the boys in blue i!t experience some of the rough camp life of soldiers; otherwise they will have a pleasant ouling. The head of the Victoria seal poacher promises to be several sizes srnal.er before he returns from the Arctic. The prospect is that the skippers of the poaching schooners will look upon the new orders as a bluff", and the result will be that they and their skins j will fall into Uncle Sam's hands. It will be poetical justice, for they deserve to be chastened for their jibes at our government. Os the asylum farm near Salem a sanitarium is being built. It is all of fir poles, and about SOxlIO feet. Two stories w ill accommo date thirty patients, affording them a pleasant change. They will all be i i one room, heated from the center in an old-fash toned wav by loir ures, with a draft in the center. The Albany bridge question is not dead by anv means. Bids for its constitution will be opened on the 27th inst. With harmonious work there is nothing to prevent its being built this summer, and the IIiKALD predicts that this will be done. The continued tains which Ore gon ii ujw expeiiencing are unusual, but not "unprecedented" or alarming. Crops are thriving under present conditions. Farm eis are jubilant, and all is well. Poi k county wool growers re said to have formed a pool for the purpose of keeping the prices of tkece up. If you suffer pricking pains on moving ttie eyes, or cannot bea bright light, and find your sight week and falling, you si.ouk promptly use Dr. II. McLean's Strengthening Eve Salve. I'd cents a box.
