The theories of the scientists in regard to all of the phenomenon on this earth, are worked out probably to their own satisfaction. Tbey are, however, subject to modi fication and change as new facts are brought to light. This point is pretty well illustrated by the Manchester l mon in refering to the fact that even i scientists are not free from perplex iiie, and nature ia constantly revealing something to cause them study and doubt. Perhaps one of the most marked examples of this is found in the phenomena presented by a well at Yakutsk, Siberia. As lone auo as 1S2S a Russian mer chant ltegan to sink this noted well, and, after working on it for three years, gave it up as a bad job, having at that timo sunk it to a depth of thirty feet without getting through the froen ground. lie communicated these facts to the Russian Academy of Science, which sent men to take charge of the digging operations at the wonderful well. These scientific gejitlemen toiled away at their work for several year, but abandoned it when a depth of 8S2 feet had been reached, with the earth still frozen as hard as a rock. In 1843 the academy had the temperature of the soil at the sides of the well taken at various depths. From the data thus ob tained they came to the startling conclusion that the ground was frozen to a depth exceeding 0,000 feet. Although it is known to meteorologists that the lowest known temperature is in that region of Siberia, it is conceded that not even that rigorous climate couiu force lorce irost to sucn a great depth below the surface. After figuring on the subject for over a quarter of a century, geolo gists have at last come to the con clusion that the great frjz.-n valley of the Lena River was de posited, frozen just as it ia found to-day, during the great grinding up era of the glacil epoch. Kight hundred and eigtitv-two feet oi frozen soil might well stagger the scientific investigator, for it vio lates all the preconceived ideas of the condition and temperature of the interior of the earth. The conclusion reached is probably the correct one, although the length of time it required to reach it leads to the impression that there may be some uncertainty about it vet. The various theories in regard to tariff and free trade, w hich are promulgated for political purjxises, do not stand before the facts, when they are fully presented. The Chronicle presents one in answering the statement of another paper to the effect that the urban imputation of the United States is increasing rapid ly, and attributes the alleged evil to protection. It says that the writer is not well informed, or he would not have made the mistake of supposing that the enormous grow th of cities in recent times is peculiar to the United States. A very slight knowledge of modem affairs would have made him familiar with the fact that the urban population of free-trade England has increased even more rapidly than that of this country. The amount of narcotics that are habitually use by human be ings is simply appalling. It is estimated that 400,OCO,UOO of the human race make use of opium, liot as a medicine, but for its ex hilarating etre:t3. From 200,000, 000 to 300,000,000 employ hasheesh for the same purpose. The betel nut is masticated by 100,000.000 inhabitants of Farther India and the islands of the Pacific and Indian oceans, while 10,000, UK) more indulge in the use of cocoa. The need of, or rather the desire ID A. I Ik Y for, some nerve stimulant is Com mon to all nations. The savage tribes of Sibeiia intoxicate thtm Melves w ith a kind of mushroom, the Indians of New Oranda with the juice of a kind of tnorn apple. The American Indian, not satisfied with tobacco, will pawn his blanket and gun for firewater enough to make him a raving lunatic. In India, in Central Asia, in the heart of Africa and among the savages of the Ameri can continent there is the same strange seeking after something that will give a temporary exalta tion anil enable the individual to be insensible for a brief period to the discomforts that environ him. The habitual use of the more powerful narcotics is local ; that of opium is principally confined to China and the countries south of it that have immediately felt is influence ; the betel nut is only used in Farther India and the islands near it, and hasheesh in India and to a certain extent among the Arabs. The use of tobacco is universal or is only limited by the ability to obtain it; that of opium and cocoa eeem to be rapidly extending among civil ized nations. Tin: American archii-ologists w ho are at work at Platea, in Greece, have come upon the re mains of an ancient temple, parti of w hich apparently go back to the sixth century, 1$.
