They are summed up by the Chronicle in its saying that there is evidently a a strong effort being made by foreigners to replenish their stocks of gold. Although the balance of trade continues in our Tavor large sums of gold continue to be ex ported. An amusing feature of this struggle to obtain gold is the fact, if it is correctly assumed that it is sought for warlike purposes that the very countries which are now piling it up in anticipation of such an emergancy will probably be foiced to issue paper money as soon as hostilities are begun. It ii a curious quality tl.at gold pos sesses, that of being a very shy metal in time of war, and nearly every great and protracted conflict in the world's hi :tory has shown that it cannot be depended upon as a circulating medium when war is raging. The most important crop of the country is wheat and its enormous production can hardly be realized. We glean that the total wheat pro duct of the United States for 1884 was 512,505,000 bushels ; its value at New York rates was $S:;0,8G2,2C0 but the prices were low on account of the largeness of the crop, which was concurrent with plenteous production in Europe and Asia. The value of the crop of 1SSU wan $342,461,707, though the product w as far less thean that of 18S4, be ing but 41)0,5(10,000 bushels. This year there is a threatened shortage of wheat in Europe, so that if the American promise of abundance is realized the farmers of this country will obtain a high price for the large surplus exported. This, of course, will cause money to be plentiful in the coming fall. Much ado has been made and great talk indulged in, over the subject of building coast defenses. Perhaps the summi.ig up of ttie matter by the Alta in the follow ing is about the truth of the matter in reality: Members of the next congress should not unduly worry about the defenseless condition of our coasts. No foreign ship has fired a hostile shot at us for seveny five years. There is no evidence that one will be fired for seventy five years to come. If one should be fired there is no evidence that any of the contemplated coast de fenses would defend us. France was protected by costly frontier forts, the building and equipping of which had sapped the substance of her people. But Germany walked past these forts as if they had been hay barracks. The only serious incident of the May day observances in Europe, which had been looked forward to with so much trepidation by near ly all the nations of the continent, occurred at Fourmiers, France. There the troops who were called out to quell the trouble, fired into the crowds of riotous workingmen, and men women and children were killed. To such an extent was the feeling carried over the subject that the simple appearance of the troops was cause for the people to break forth with oaths and imprecations. It is feared that the outcome may carry con siderable political significance with it before the matter is ended. The grip is creating sad havoc in England. Advice from that country show that the epidemic of influenza is spreading, and that many manufacturing concerns have been compelled to shut dow n on account of its prevalence. The nhvaicians are still discussing the 1 4 " visitation, but no one thus far has been able to explain why the dis ease has been so severe and widespiead during the past two years. The desert places upon the earth are to be made to blossom as does the rose. It is now said that an enormous reservoir of water one hundred and twenty feet below the surface has been discovered at El-Golea, a small caravan station in the midst of the Sahara Desert. The reservoir was discovered while a number of workmen were sinking a well at 1 Golea. Tue shaft sunk already gives forty gallons of good, clear water per minute, and it is ex pected that this amount can read ily be increased should it be found that a larger quantity is necessary This is said to be first time that water has been found at so slight a depth in the Sahara. It is a matter worthy of note that the welcome extended to President Harrison has been spon taneous, hearty, without partisan feeling. It - is the president that is being welcomed, and the una nimity w hich it has been accom plished will go far towards estab lishing that when a president is once elected he is the president for the whole country and for those who happen to vote for bim. The tin manufactured in this country, and the product of our mines, lias taken tangioie snape and form, and cannot be ignored and yet the anathemas against the McKinley bill which is the cause ot the development of the industry in that direction still continues with unabated vigor, Consistency is a jewel of rarest virtue icdeed.
