Tub matter of the power that a husband holds over the poison and liberty of a wife, under the Hnglish law, is a subject that has been in dispute, and one that it would seem as if the enlighten ment of the nineteenth .century should have long ago settled iy establishing the precedent that what was sauce for the goose w as sauce for the gander, that is, that the husband's authority could not exceed that of the wife's. It seems, however, that then remains quite a sprinkling of the male bipeds who walk the surface of the earth, w ho are still imbued with the whimsical idea that they r flip sub' lords of creation, and that woman was made to obey them, and be subject to tlicii whims, even to the extent of sub initting to castigation at their oaii sweet will and pleasure. The Jackson case in England, mention of which was made some weeks ago, wherein the courts decided that the husband could not abduct and coerce the w ife into living with him, has brought con siderable light upon this subject. The New York Herald in speak ing of that case says : It would be natural to suppose that the recent decision of the English Court of Appeals holding that a husband had no right to imprison his wife or couij3l her t j live with hiiu would be hailed witli enthusiasm in every community where woman is respected. I!ut it has been denonneed by leading law periodicals in London, and it was only a day or two that the J.onl Chancellor felt called upon to announce in the I louse of Lords that the government would not introduce a bill "giving men power to imprison their wives." The Law Journal says that "perhaps never in tin history of judicial de cisions has authority been so bold ly overruled and disregard as in Jackson's case,'' while the Solici tor's Journal declares that now for the first time in English his tory "a wife is at liberty immedi ately alter going through the ere mony of marriage in church to desert her husband and without any excuse condemn him to a life of celibacy.' These critics evi- dently take Lord ManMield's view ! 1 -" "ot l,e Mit,",llt u a"" of the law, that "a husband has I orujun Ki.lncj Tea cures hcailaclie, inoin . , . . . . . . ! tiiicm-c if urii.c, brick dust st'tlimeni, burn- power and dominion over tllS W lie j illk,r ,,,.,,(.,1 st.K,ti,,n hik' urinating, and and m.iv keen hpr bv force within !' From this barbarous sentiment it is refreshing to the view of the l.nn.?nn T.nu- Tinl flint Hie ind''- .--. j ment of the Court of Appeals is a charter of personal liberty oi niairied women.' THE WOMES liUl.F. 'ruins are some pt cul'ur featues, probably only local ones, brought out in the accesion of women to official positions. For instant e th$ St. Paul Globe fays there Bee ni s to be one singular feature brought out in connection with the late municipal voting in Kan Baa, more particularly in reference to the school boards. It appears that in some of the cities the fe male teachers in the schools op Ksed the election of the women who were candidates. It is not quite certain whether this to fre quently was the case as to be the rule, or to be attributed to .special causes. There may have been cases where women put in school Jioards lacked the needful qualities or success and eflicie iey in the position. Possibly instances may be known where even men have not displayed infallible w isdom or proper devotion to the duties of directors of public schools. It is believed that as a rule women should be given a share in the in the management of school af fairs. If women are better adapted lo'Tue-kacliing of young children, in jictitod by their more frequent lection, than the other sex, is lifl'ctilt to find very cogent reasons ftT denying them participation in the management. The charge that they lack the business faculty is discontenanced by the varieties of successful business conducted by women. The participation of women in the management of the schools will be found beneficial and wholesome as a rule. A hkckst Havana letter relates that the authorities have been making a very weak fight against the band of the bandits, C'ercia. I he civilized world will turn with horror from the inellic'ency of the pursuit of this fiendish band. One of their recent exploits was to enter the house of an aged couple and demand their money and be cause it was not forthcoming to suit their cupidity, one of them took the aged woman, half drtssed as she was, diagged her to a tree and tieing her arms together with a rope throwing the end over a limb and drawing her clear from the ground, beat her until death ensued. The aged husband was bound, g:igired and pricked with knives until he was insensible and made a maniac. It is doubtful ii we want much reciprocity with a government that allo.vs such atrocities to a-) unpunished. TIIK VOHLI KNKIC1IEI.
