body of cavalry was dispatched to
the place and the workmen were
unable to withstand the combined
attacks. A number of arrests
were made and the several prison
ers found to be heavily armed.
The police broke through the
cordon. Again did the soldiers
charge and the crowd was lorceu
to beat a retreat. The fighting
has c iused the greatest alarm and
f,ue excitment is intensified as each
iiour passes. The police are utter
ly poweile8s to control the howling
mob and the authorities have been
compelled to summon additional
reinforcements of soldiers. The
rioters have t ut th telephone and
telegraph wires ami are holding an
uproarious meeting at head piat
ters, where, the anarchist's speak
ers ate vociferously and widely
haranguing their hearers and in
citing tiie ai ready maddened men
to commit further acts of violence.
Dense crowds tun rounds the labor
exchange, which building the sol
diers have cleared of all persons
at the point of the bayonet. The
military are taking every pieeaii
tion to subdue the mob and have
brought a cannon to the place lor
the purpose of intimidating them.

and threaten to burn the Jewish

Tacoma, May 1. -The attorney
for (ieorge Stowe, convicted of the
murder of Enoch Crosby, have ap
pealed the case to the supreme
court on a writ of error. Stowe'e
case has twice before been brought
before this court and decided ad
versely to him.

Cincinnati, May 1. Over a year
ago two saloon keepers were con
victed oi violating the state laws
by keeping open on Sunday. To
day the circuit court, which rank
ed next to the supreme court of
the stale, continued the sentence
of the conviction of the lower
court. The penalty is a line and
imprisonment.

is exhaustively discussed. One of
his suggestions is :
"Clearly, if the government
would enforce its laws against the
railroad companies, its chief exec
utive oilicer, who has charge of
this department whenever he
becomes satisfied any management
is persistently disobeying the laws,
should have power to tace posses
sion of the property and manage it
through the intervention of re
ceiver or otherwise, until be can
have satisfactory assurance that
he will hereafter be obeyed. The
enactment of a law giving this
lower would probably be effective
to prevent discrimination and
other violations of the law, with
out being actually set in motion.
Such law, if enforced, would reach
the real culprit where fines and
penalties reach only their repre
sentatives and employes."

Seattle, May 1. Jack Smith,
alias "Linsey" was caught by some
miners at Gil mon, 42 miles east of
here to day, with a bottle cf kero
sene oil iu his possession and act
ing in a suspicious manner near a
hotel at that place. The miners
believe that he had been hired by
the coal company to create a pre
judice against them and furnish
an excuse for having guards there.
I'hey therefore seized him, tied a
rope around his neck, and swung
him twice to a limb of a tree.
Smith in terror confessed that a
man named Brundage had sent
him from Seattle to set lire to a
building owned by Brundage. lie
was then let down, brought hers
and locked up.

Great Britain Getting; Entangled
With Balraaceda.

trouble between Great Britain
and Balmaceda's government in
Chili. Two officers proscribed by
P.almaceda took refuge in the
Uritish legation in Santiago. The
Chilian troops demanded their
surrender. The British minister
refused. The foreign office sup
ports the minister and have so
warned Balmaceda.
Kailroad Accident Near London,
London, May 1. -While the
P.righton express, crowded with
tieople, on its way to business in
this city, was crossing a bridge at
Norwood, about seven miles south
of Ixmdon bridge, this morning,
the structure collapsed and six of
the rear cars fell in the bed of the
shallow stream. The carriages
were smashed to atoms and very
many passengers sustained more
or less painful injuries, but no
perse 11 was killed.
