I Aa Exhibition of Art Work by tie Singer j Sewing Macbiuo Co, A beautiful art display is now j on exhibition at the store of F. M. ' French on First street, by the! Singer Sewing Machine Co. The j w ork is all done on the improved Singer machine without any at-' tachnient whatever and much of it ! is being done every day in the presence of visitors. First lo at tract tl e visi'ors eye is the won derful Kensington wot k. The best piece of this an; in appearance of any oil painting. It is done rtith the finest sewing silk as well as the heaviest cf rope silk, on any kind cf material. Among the pieces displayed are a cow's head, which look tne gold medal at the Pa 1 is exposition, a basket of grapes which show the foliage and bloom of the fruit as natural as can b, produced by an artist's brush ; the "three dogs at the 111 i-tei's grave" is also a wonderful production. One great beauty of the work is that both sides are exactly alike where silk is used in the shuttle. The rope silk work is Mope from the under side, thus enabling the operator to work from a stamped hack. This work is usj.1 011 the heavier materials such as plushes and velvtt, for curtains, pillows, cushions, portiers, etc., includii g fringes. Nothing is finished by baud, but everything is completed with plain machine, : nd when dune looks much smoother and better tiuished than hand work. This improved machine lo"s lace, feather stitch, suiol iug work, and take tinsel arosene, etc.. direct from the shuttle, without any attachment. A beautiful doll's drcsn id exhi bited, made of the finest lawn, and sewed with No. ItK) threa I, show smocking and feather stitch. The work will be on exhibition until Wednesday evening, at w hich time a line piece of art work will be given away. All ladies who call w ill be given a ticket en titling them to a chun.e in the drawing. NORTHWEST fiOTES The manufacture of poisoned wheat, is another new industry that has been established at Pul. man. The object is to kill s.piii -rels. Mike Sweeney, while snifering from delirium tremens, created a sensation in Spokane the other day by jumping into the river. He was fnslied out, however, and will probably be sent to an a.-ylum. A farmer near Walla Wall.i this week sold !,Ui)(l bushels of w heat at !) cents. This is tl.e highest price that has been paid tiicie, and it is also about the last large lot of wheat in the hands of the farmers in that county. The Cumberland Presbyterian church of Kugene, a new editi,:e, started in the fiscal year free t'rom .1. bt, having paid out during tin past year over .15,0110. The Myrtle Gold Mining com pany had on exhibition last week a large jar full of line gold, the re.-ult of a two week's run. It is estimated that in this ratio the product of the mines will be about .pi,(U( per 111 Uith. The three hardware biirgl'.irs who went through l.ayton's store and were captured by the Jackson county authorities at Gold Hill almost succeeded in making good their esc ipe from the jail at tin Pass 011 Monday of last week. Tin jail is a wood and spike concern. A large body of line slat.; has just been discovered lamb of Grant's Pass. Samples sent to San Francisco, Portland and New lers y are pronounced lirst-class. No opening has been nude, but the surface show ing has been pro nounced excelled by a slater from New Jersey. This is the fust slate ipiarry discovered in Oregon, a.al will probably soon rank as one of the leading industries of Southern Oregon. John I.. Biggs is the name of the lucky man who dis covered it. Will Improve With t'.ilti vali.oi. Such will la the case with this county when most of the land is tilled. This county will have the advantage of many of the counties in the Inland Kmpire, from the fact that of its heing plentifully supplied with timber, and it is known that in a country where limber abounds, more rain falls than in the treeless regions. Therefore taking all things intc consideration there is no cause why this county should not bo as productive as the Willamette valley in proportion to the number of acres that will be tilhd in the near future. tiik woi:i.i i:m;iciii;i.
