The mail route from Turner to 1 Mehama, via ubliiuety and Stay- j ton, has been discontinued, aiid ; tin- mail for Stayton and Mehama will hereafter be carried on the Oregon Pacific trains. A coi respondent from Stayton, writing to the Salem Statesman bids the capital good bye as follows : "This virtually severs the connection between this part of Marion count y and Salem. This matter all'ects the business interests of every man in Salem. If this state of :ill:iii s is nil,. wed to eiit our I'utuie interests must be in iiarniotiy w ltli Albany. COAST NOTES. A carload of eighteen heavy draft horses, purchased in the East by A. N. Holcomb, of Seattle, and en route for that city, was de railed and all the animals burned to death near Laurel, Mont. Seals and sealions are reported in great numbers off the mouth of the Columbia. This is indicative of the presence of many salmon, but it takes a large percentage of the number to feed the voracious seadogs. The sheep raising industry never had a brighter outlook in this eountry than at present, says the Ochoco Review. There we're no losses during the w inter, the clip this spring will be large and of line ipiality, and the price of both wool and mutton have an upward t?ndency. Independent steamers on the Upper Willamette are mill talked of at intervals. Citizens of Salem have about decidtd to own the controlling interest in a boat to run in opposition to the Oregon Pacific's line. Twelve years ago Salem capital was interested in steamboats on thu Willamette. At that time things were lively along the river. The People's Transpor tation company had four boats on the river, the Relief, the Reliance, the Success and the Onward. Two independent boats were operating alxiut the same time, the Enter prise and the Active. The last named boat was built by Captain Apperson, and her race with the Reliance was a memorable one. The race had been talked of for a long time and everyone knew just when it was to come ol!', and the interest was, of course, very great. Th? remains of one of the boats, the Reliance, are now decaying in the slough above the nii'l at Sa- TtIK HOIiM. KNKICIIKO.
