Secretary of State MeCrule has telegraphed to the Oregon deiegation in congress house con current resolution No. lM, asking congress o make an immed:att appropriation for a portage rail way at the dalles of t lie Columbia, as a much needed measure of relief to the prodmvrs of Eastern Oregon. A man not far from The Dalles sold his son-in-law one half of a cow and then refused to divide the milk, maintaining that lie sold only the front hall. The son-in-law was also required to provide all the feed the cow consumed and compelled to carry water to her three times a day. A ripple of, excitement was created in railroad circles yester day, when it was repotted that Col. T. E. llog. president and re ceiver of the Oregon Pacilii: rail road company, had arrived with a party of New Yorkers, and that the party had gone to the front on a special train. The report, however, proved to be a mistake. Win. M. Hoag, vice-president and general mana ger, is here, having just returned from a tiip to San Francisco, and in company with several gentle men, w ho are strangers, went to the front yesterday morning. One engine with a snow plow had gone over the road to the end of the track the day before. They fou id about five feet of Know. Other sections of the Northwest may make claims to be great wheat-prodticting regions, but the Willamette valley remains the banner section, lor while (.tlier places get a crop only once in three or lnur yars., the crop in the Wil lamette never fails. This year the valiey wheat, which always brings the highest pi ice of any rai-ed ou this coast, has been particularly line, and brings 10 cent per centai, or between " and 0 cent per bushel, more than Eastern Oregon w heat. A great deal of the valley wheat is now manufactured into Hour for shipment, and this Hour w ins its way wherever sent on account of its w hiteness. An Exciting Glove Coiit-it. A couple of amateur boxes caused a little scene Saturday night, and one of them was badly scared. While indulging in a friendly set-ti, Alvin Ixtng landed a chance blow upon Purct Moore's neck at the butt of the ear. The latter fell senseless, and remained in that condition so long that those present began to fear that he would not recover. The amended city charter will go into ell'ect to-day, and there w i.l now be nothing to prevent the city fr.ni beginning preparations for the system of public improve ments to be made in Albany this summer.
