Uowland, long a resi dent of Linn county in eirly days, but who for several yers has been in I'tah, returned to this net ion a short time since. He arrived in Portland yesterday, and about lost himself in endeavoring to lind some of the business houses with which he was familiar six years ago. It is said President Harrison and his cabinet will visit the Pa cific coast during the summer. It ho they will probably make a tour oi the states of California, Oicyoti and Washington. President Har rison desires to sec something of the progressive Pacilic coast states. In fact, the far western stales an' a much more important facior in national politics than i;i year gone by. The C.'alitiiii:i .Mim-M. The wagon road bill for an ap propriation for a road to the mine-' of the Calapooia district w as cut down from $10,(100 to f"(M by the special committee, and is likely to go favorably, ami it it slnnl L it will not build the ro.id perhaps but it will enable the companies interested to complete it to the mines this coming season, so a mill can be taken in this year, which will enable the entire cam;, to Ik? fairly tested. There has been some of the richest speci mens of gold quart, taken from this camp lately lhat has ever been found in this state, and if a wagon road can be got in this season, times will soon liven up in this part of Oregon. Numerous ltera(lut-. The immense number of tramps that swarm through the Widmi ette valley, attracted here by the mild weather of our winters, 'form standing nuisances to the peace and prosperity of the country. The many robberies and outrages com mitted attest this. This city is infested with her full quota ot this J class of gentry ami small burglaries i are no uncommon occurrence. At Salem Ex-Street Commissioner Graham was sand-bagged and relieved of Jfl'.OO in the very heart of the city. When found he was lying on the sidewalk )n an un conscious condition. The Kallruml C'liiiiiiiission. Hon. S. A. l'awson, of Linn county is spoken of as a candidate for the position of railroad com missioner. The legist iture could not make a better selection. He; is well informed, thoroughly j capable ami known to be a man of . strict integrity. If the legislature' passes the bill to increase the' powers of the railroad cuiutuis-j sinners, men of practical,! sensible views are wanted, ami Mr. Dawson would make just such a commissioner. RAILROAD MATTERS. The Oat'cxA for Activs Work Th:s Year 13 Certainly Promising. The outlook for active railroad work in and about Albany during the coming summer is very en totiraging. The bills that have been passed by congress and the Oregon legislature, authorizing the Albany 1 Astoria Uailroad Co. to bridge the Willamette indicate that their company means busi ness It is well known that certain ivgotiations have been pending between the Alluny A: Astoria Railroad Company and some of the big roads, looking toward the m::iging ol this com pany into a transcontinental road, and the prep. nations lor construc tion look as if something may have been accomplished in this direction, and it is certain that the company will not be idle this season. On the Oregon Pacilic railroad it now begins to look as if active woi k would be resumed this year. Tap company is arranging to put the entire eastward Hue in thor ough repair to the end of the track, and those who are in a posi tion to know say that the work of pushing the road eastwaid will be under way early in the summer. There is a bill before the Ore gon legislature, allowing the Oregon Pacilic Company to issue bonds for a long r time than L.M years, which means more than ap pears n the face of it. It has already pas-ed 1 1 10 senate and h is passed its second leading in the house. The Yaqiiin.i Post in referring to the measure hays : Jf ti.is bill passes the house and so far as we know there is no objection to it the extension of the Oregon Pacific road will be resumed in the early spiing, as we are as sured there will be no trouble in obtaining the necessary funds for prosecuting the work upon the re pea! (which this bill dice's) of the provision in the charter which prevents the company issuing t'onds lor a loiig n' peiiod than Li years. It is at least safe to say that tin road being in the hands oi Col Ib'gg as re -eiver, will not tend to prevent the work of construction on the road. LVn:it Since tha above wa written our telegraphic report of the legislative proceedings brings 'ho news that the Oregon Pacilic bond bill has a so passed the house, which is still more eueojr aging for the eai ly resumption oi work 011 the c.i-tAard extension ot the hegon Pacilic. To tli,; F..lit..r of tii itKiti.i, Now that the Alnany charter bill has been passed by he legis lature and will become a law, would it not be wise for Albany to begin making the necessary pre liu inary preparations toward the much desired end. the construction of the bridge. T here are several important ques tions to he determined, such as how much money the chy of Al bany i-i willing to put up, ho. inch is wanted Mom the county, w hat kind of a bridge is wanted, etc. li it is the duly of the ci'y com cil til go forwaul with this work, well mid good, but if the cit izens are to uudtii tak-! it, a public meeting to arrange tie preliuiir.a lie, it seems to you co-respondent, would now be in order.
