It is said President Harrison

that swarm through the Widmi

RAILROAD MATTERS.
The Oat'cxA for Activs Work Th:s Year
13 Certainly Promising.
The outlook for active railroad
work in and about Albany during
the coming summer is very en
totiraging. The bills that have
been passed by congress and the
Oregon legislature, authorizing the
Albany 1 Astoria Uailroad Co.
to bridge the Willamette indicate
that their company means busi
ness It is well known that
certain ivgotiations have been
pending between the Alluny
A: Astoria Railroad Company
and some of the big roads, looking
toward the m::iging ol this com
pany into a transcontinental road,
and the prep. nations lor construc
tion look as if something may
have been accomplished in this
direction, and it is certain that
the company will not be idle this
season.
On the Oregon Pacilic railroad
it now begins to look as if active
woi k would be resumed this year.
Tap company is arranging to put
the entire eastward Hue in thor
ough repair to the end of the
track, and those who are in a posi
tion to know say that the work of
pushing the road eastwaid will be
under way early in the summer.
There is a bill before the Ore
gon legislature, allowing the
Oregon Pacilic Company to issue
bonds for a long r time than L.M
years, which means more than ap
pears n the face of it.
It has already pas-ed 1 1 10 senate
and h is passed its second leading
in the house.
The Yaqiiin.i Post in referring
to the measure hays : Jf ti.is bill
passes the house and so far as we
know there is no objection to it
the extension of the Oregon
Pacific road will be resumed in
the early spiing, as we are as
sured there will be no trouble in
obtaining the necessary funds for
prosecuting the work upon the re
pea! (which this bill dice's) of the
provision in the charter which
prevents the company issuing
t'onds lor a loiig n' peiiod than Li
years.
It is at least safe to say that tin
road being in the hands oi Col
Ib'gg as re -eiver, will not tend to
prevent the work of construction
on the road.
LVn:it Since tha above wa
written our telegraphic report of
the legislative proceedings brings
'ho news that the Oregon Pacilic
bond bill has a so passed the
house, which is still more eueojr
aging for the eai ly resumption oi

Now that the Alnany charter

would it not be wise for Albany to
begin making the necessary pre
