If a grocer was asked to do nate groceries to one abundantly able to pay for them he would re fuse. The proprietor of a news paer must pay for the free adver tising if the beneficiary dijes not; an I yet it is one of the hardest things to be learned hy many that a newspap-r has space in its columns lo rent, and must rent to live. To give away or rent it for anything less than living rales would be as certainly fatal as for a landlord to furnish a house rent free. Violin, Voire ami Cornet. Five talented musicians will give an attractive programme at the opera house in this city Wednes day, January 21. FUN CN TEE JOHN DAY, Mach Trouble Brtwem Oat.ls acd Sherp Owners - Cabins and Hay Burned The Pendleton East Oregonian says that lively times are antici pated on the middle fork of the John Day. The deep-rooted ha tred between ca'tle and sheepmen over the range question has heen fanned into a llatne by depredations lately committed, and may result in trouble. On December :.!, J. V. Quinn received two notices to ieavd with s'uep which he was herding cn Six-Mile for Mr. J. His. The tirst read : "Warning'. Oct those sheep across the river in thirty days, or t ake the consequent es."' This the young man parsed by mile j led, and soon re i -ved a see ond reminder as follows: "Move across the river in twenty-four hours, or take what fol lows." I loth were signed "Middle Fork Slock Association." The second notice was a'so ignored, and one day when Quiim was abo.it a mile from camp, h' saw smoke issuing from his cabin, lie arrived at the scene in time to find everything destroyed cabin, clothing, blank eta and provisions. He then re moved the sheep to Mr. Gillis ranch. Among the other depredations committed have been the burning of tiilliarn Bros.' hav, the burning of bay for Mr. Oillis who has since been guarding his haystacks day and nigiit w ith a gun for lire-buga, ami the burning of twenty-six tons for Shivers : ros. near Kilter. The latter d.-cd was ounnitted on Christmas night, and the holiday was iinis ceieorated by a rousinu honlire. Two young men, Kube (ilchrist and William Steven-on. were arrested on suspicion as the perpetratois of the offense, and o iuiid over in the sum of $1200 each bv Justice Lucien K verts, of l.tij; Creek. This did not meet the approval of friends ot the ac cused, ami New Year's eve Mr. Everts was burned in efligv. Hair was pulled from the tail of Quinn's old gray mare to make whiskers tor the etligy. I Ieppner sheepmen are wild over the- trout de, and will adopt means oi retaliation. They ii.tend to con test the range with the cattlemen, t w atch for ollenders and to prose cute them if caught. Fifteen thou sand sheep belonging to Kelsay it Co. will be removed into John Day from Moscow next spring to eat the grass. There may bj m ore trouble.
