IuUotionn ol the Big Roads Concerning j Construction in Oregon, Many speculations are being made with record to the intentions of the Union I'aci'ic, as regards western development, now .that Jayliould has assumed control. Of course it is beyond the ken of outiidcrs to fathom the view of the railroad king but one may take a common sense and business like view of the situation. It is a fact that there are three trans continental roads, all powerful in themselves, that are striving for the prospective bu-iness of the growing Northwest the Noriliern facitic, L'ni'n and Southern Pa cific. In all the speculation and guesses that have hitherto been given to the public, says the Columbian of Astoria, little has heen said about the Southern Pa cific. The very fact that this line now stops at Portland ought to be sutlicient to a close observer to in dicate that President lluut'.utiton has not niven up the idea of build ing more lines i Oregon. By constructing a line from Ogden toa pint on the Southern Pacific system, say Albany, he would comtete with the Union Pacific lor tlie Poitland trade and inci dentally open a rich and valuable country along the route, l'resi den: Huiiting'on is about the most wide awake railroad man in the United States. He has been the lo ad and front of the Central and Southern Pacific system, ami his drain conceived and earned out the project whereby he can ship produce from Portlai d bv wav ol S in Francisco and New Orleans to Newport News, Va.. where the Southern Pacific of Kentucky has immense warehouses and e'eva ors the whole owned and con trolled bv the Southern Pacific system. He has cast his eye on i ismria iiv ine sea. iinu u lie is -iifliciently encouraged, he may determine to build the line from some point on the Southern Pa citie in Oregon to Astoria, so as to come to deep water. Hut builders f railroads, such as Huntington, i loiihl and mil pre somew hat in dependent or more projierly ! speaking, they can aftord to j ait awhile. It is therefore evi , lent ih;u those sections mostly I ml .-rested, in order to get the ad j antagcs that such hues would j j ve a community, must come i .i ward nd oiler inducements to i i hose ventlemen, to get their at :ent - n. Itioi.-i rrentte, Mts.-r- a -l Faull, members f the Urt sia-tr hoard of rail toad coinmis.-K-iiers, have recently turned from a lour of inspection f the lilies of the Southern Pacific .s far south as their juiisd'ciion extends. They art just now pre paring their repoit, which will be ubnntted, wilh recommendations, to Manager !'. Koehler, of the Southern Pacific lines in Oregon, flie trestles in Jackson county they lotind to le in a bad condition geneially. many ol them having sen built when the road si vent through, eight years ago, ince which time little or no re-oiii-R have been made to them. I'he Ijng treule at Talent they ound to be dangerous probably more so than the one at Lahinti eior the disaster. An examina tion of this trestle was made at the teijuest f numerous persons re--itling in the vi. inity. Their re eouimeiidations to the road in relation to this trestle will urte its immediate icconsl ruction in a suh ntantial manner. The Harihhurg bridge has also been examined. I'he bridge was found to be in god condition, but some repays to the aopioaclies are recommended. Salem Statesman. KelliKertint Lawyti John Kelsav, one ef old war horses of the Oregon . . .nid wf" known as an Indian nt b:er as an alio ney, despite Ins jears seems to be as vigorous as he used t be. According to the Corvallis li.izettea spiriteil discu si n be tween Hay burn and Kelsay at tt.e s ecial term ol circuit court on Wednesday, culminated in a per sonal encounter upon which Judge Pies threw a bucket of cold wa'er in the stvle of a $20 line on each of i he belligerents. A brakeman named Meekin sbpiied and fell from the idalform ' THL MYSTERIOUS AN NIL ABBOTT. Xbe Wou'iertnl Feats of This letiic Bit of Ftiuininity. Concerning the wond- rful feats of t lie mysterious elect tic won tr, Annie Abliotl, who will give an exhibition of her phenomenal powi8 in this city on Christinas night, the Oregonian says: Shoitiy after .S o'clock t he lady appeared on the stage ami was greeted with applause. At the bitniiuuliitii ..t tit.r mi ri'itrf.r .tin. unttee often fron- the audience I ciuie upon the stage and took seats. On the committee were two lady physicians, and one of them took Mrs. Abbott to an ad joining dressing room, and after making a thorough examination, lepoiled that she had un her no magnetic or other apparatus; nothing, in fact, but the ordinary feminine apparel. Mrs. Abbott in appearance is about what she is said to be slight in figure, thotiuh compai-tly built, with a l Auarkahly well-developed forearm and biceps, and a pleasant, attractive fa-f. After viewing her r maikable performances, wherein she handles neavy weights, almost us though they "were feathers, the wonder is how she does it. It is certainly not by physical strength, for a Hercules could scarcely accoifi p'ish what tin' tittle woman does he pulls .ni l hauls about tlie stage a chair in the bands of strong men ; she hul ls a chair, slid, seemingly with no exertion, suc cessfully resists the efforts of sev eral men to take it from her; ehe stands with a billiard cue resting on the inside of her extended thumbs, ami seven men fail to push her Irom her perpendicular posi'iou; she lifts seven men piled promiscuously on one chair, and a I number ot other similar feats are pi-riorined ilh an ease that is surprising. Wiihal it is an interesting ami at the san.e time a very amusing exhibition. What the force is that enables so small a petsotiality as Mrs. Abbott to exercise such phenomenal strength pu..les all beholdeis, and would no doubt prove an interesting subject of in vestigation to those of a scientific inclination. The people in this part of Linn canity, although not opposed to anappiopi iatioii for the Columbian Imposition, think that i little timely aid from the Stat- in build ing wagon roads to our mines on the Sanliam and Calapooia would do as much toward advertising and developing our resources as any oilier means that could be adopted.
